Real Madrid vs Almeria Preview
Real Madrid are back at the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend for a home game against lowly Almeria. These teams endured contrasting emotions in midweek with Los Blancos humbled by Girona while Almeria finally broke their away duck with victory at Getafe.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side were hampered by the late absences of Thibaut Courtois and Karim Benzema at Montilivi but they fielded a strong side apart from that so the manner of their 4-2 defeat was a surprise. It’s perhaps inevitable that we’ll see a few sub-par displays from them in the remaining league games with nothing really at stake now, but they will want to take momentum into the Copa del Rey Final and Champions League Semi-Final so we should expect some form of response here.
Benzema should be fit to return up front and that ought to increase their goal threat against one of the weakest defences in the league. However Ancelotti will want a much better defensive display after Taty Castellanos was allowed the freedom of Montilivi to score four goals on Tuesday night.
24 hours later, Almeria were experiencing one of their best nights since winning promotion last year. Faced with a crucial relegation six-pointer at Getafe, Rubi’s side finally produced a big away performance with Luis Suarez scoring twice at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez to seal a 2-1 win.
With some favourable home fixtures to come, that result could prove absolutely decisive in securing Almeria’s top flight status. They climbed to 15th as a result of that win and have another massive game on Tuesday when they host bottom club Elche. The importance of that fixture and the congested schedule may prompt Rubi to rest a host of key men here in a game they’d most likely lose even with their strongest XI.

With Almeria having struggled away all season and likely to rest some key players, this is a good opportunity for Real Madrid to immediately bounce back from the shock defeat at Girona.
