Espanyol vs Getafe Preview

Espanyol match

On Sunday there is a massive game at the bottom of the league as 19th place Espanyol host 18th place Getafe in the RCDE Stadium. Both sides need the three points but both teams are out of form. The pressure is on. We should be in for an interesting match with goals and possibly red cards in this one.

Espanyol are winless in eight games and their decent home form has also vanished recently after losing back-to-back home matches. Head Coach Luis García has said this upcoming match is like a final. Los Periquitos are three points behind Getafe and anything other than a win here will see his side drift further away.

In their last outing, a midweek fixture away at Villarreal, Javi Puado put his side in the lead just before Half Time, but Espanyol were asleep coming into the Second Half and found themselves 2-1 down on 63 minutes. Dani Parejo’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Fernando Pacheco but unfortunately the ball came back to where Parejo was standing, and he tapped in. Striker Joselu made it 2-2 but Luis García’s men looked dead on their feet and couldn’t withstand Villarreal’s onslaught and in the end were comfortably beaten 4-2. Espanyol must dust themselves down and go again if they are to escape this relegation dogfight that they see themselves in.

Getafe also lost in midweek at home to Almería by a 2-1 margin, a result that put Los Azulones into the relegation zone and took Almería out of it. It took just six minutes for a wonderful strike from Luis Suárez put La Unión ahead. The game was very open from minute one as both sides went for it but things went from bad to worse for Getafe as Djene was given a straight red for fouling Luis Suárez on the stroke of Half Time. It was Suárez again who made it 2-0 and although Getafe were down to ten men, they kept pushing and created chances. Borja Mayoral got a well worked goal back in the 70th minute and it was end to end right up until the final whistle.

The result didn’t go down well with the Getafe board and a day later Head Coach Quique Sánchez Flores was relieved of his duties. Incoming is Getafe sporting director Rubén Reyes who will take charge on a temporary basis, and he will be hoping he can end Getafe’s run of 9 league away games without a win by taking all three here.
