Barcelona vs Real Betis Preview

Camp Nou empty

Barcelona are back at Camp Nou and hoping to edge closer to the league title with a home game against Real Betis weekend. The visitors are fighting hard for European qualification so it won’t be easy though for the Catalans who suffered a defeat against Rayo in midweek.

Andoni Iraola’s side have become a major bogey side for Barcelona with victories in 3 of the last 4 meetings between the clubs. There was at least a Barça goal in this particular clash with Robert Lewandoski scoring which will help his confidence levels. The Polish striker could do with a positive ending to the campaign having struggled in 2023 after a really bright start to his time at Camp Nou.

The good news for Xavi is that he’ll have close to a full strength squad here for the first time in several months. All of his regular starters are likely to be involved although it may be too soon for Ousmane Dembele and Andreas Christensen to start.

With Real Madrid also losing in the previous matchday, Barcelona are still firmly on course for the title. Even if Los Blancos win all of their remaining fixtures, Barça will need just 11 points from their final 7 matches to win the title.

On their day, Real Betis are another side capable of taking points off them and there’s usually plenty of action and entertainment when these sides meet. With neither particularly clinical in front of goal currently, it may not be such a classic, but we should still see chances at both ends with Betis hoping for a surprise win to bolster their European ambitions.

They suffered a setback in terms of their Champions League aspirations in midweek with a goalless home draw against 4th placed Real Sociedad. With 6 points separating the sides, Betis really needed a win there, particularly given the tough fixture they have this weekend. Europa League qualification may prove a more realistic target now for Betis who aren’t in great form with 3 defeats and only 1 victory from their previous 5 matches.

Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Real Betis

Home comforts and a squad that has been bolstered by the return of some important players should help Barcelona get back on track here. Betis haven’t been particularly convincing of late, but they always carry a goal threat and could get on the scoresheet with Barça looking slightly more vulnerable in central defence currently.
