Girona vs Espanyol Preview
On Saturday we have a Catalan derby as Girona take on Espanyol in the Estadi Montilivi. It was 2-2 back in January between the sides and it was a real end to end game. We could be in for the same again here.
Girona went into the international break on the back of a couple of losses and a draw. It was their Ukrainian star Viktor Tsgyankov who bailed his side out in their last outing against Rayo netting a brace. The Girona midfielder is in fine form at the moment and Head Coach Míchel will be hoping that form continues coming into this one.
Although the Blanquivermells go into this match without a win in three games, they were unfortunate in the recent home defeat against Atlético Madrid and Míchel will know if his players perform like they did in that game they could pick up the all-important three points, but it is a derby and derbies like to throw everything up in the air.
Girona will be hoping for a fast start and to control the game like they did in the first half when the two sides last met. A shaky start to the second half was what let Espanyol get back into the game and if Girona want all three points, they will have to be up for it all game.
Espanyol are also winless in three games. They sit just one point above the relegation places. Fans were calling for the sacking of Head Coach Diego Martínez after their 3-1 drubbing at the hands of Celta Vigo in their last outing. With the international break happening, things may have calmed down for now but if Los Periquitos don’t get anything out of this game, we could see a new coach in the dugout for the Athletic Club match.
Espanyol can take confidence from the fact they have scored in all but one away game this season; whether that will be enough to get anything from this game we will soon find out. Espanyol striker Joselu is returning from international duty after scoring twice on debut for Spain and his club side will be hoping he can get his name on the scoresheet again in this one.

This should be an entertaining match and form goes out of the window when it is a derby game. Girona are quite solid at home and with the pressure mounting up on Head Coach Diego Martínez, it is likely that Girona will take the three points in a close fought encounter.
