Girona vs Almeria Preview

Girona match action

LaLiga matchday 22 kicks off with a meeting of two teams who came up from the second tier last season. Girona and Almeria have both shown enough to suggest they are capable of staying in this league but there is still plenty of work for both to be done before that goal is achieved.

Girona are 2 points better off than their opponents heading into this game and while a win wouldn’t move them any higher in the table, it would give them a significant 7 point cushion on the bottom 3. They will need to play better than they did in their last game though with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Cadiz one of the darkest days in a mostly bright season for Michel’s team.

The goals have dried up a bit of late too with just 1 scored in 4 matches for the Catalan side. Finding the net wasn’t a problem earlier in the campaign but they haven’t been at their best in the final third in recent weeks. Injuries haven’t helped matters but they should be in a slightly stronger position on that front here with David Lopez and Reinier expected to be fit enough to play some part after recent lay-offs.

Almeria are in a better position from a fitness perspective but no matter what they try, that elusive first away win continues to desert them. It’s just 3 points from 10 road games for Rubi’s side this season and they are putting themselves under a lot of pressure when they play at home as a result.

They have continued to win games in front of their own fans but a 3-2 defeat against Betis last time out at the Power Horse, means they remain right in the thick of the relegation scrap. Defensively there are still question-marks about this Almeria side but like their opponents, they’ve certainly got options in the final third.

Score Prediction: Girona 2-2 Almeria

This should be a good game between two teams who look to be positive when possible. Girona will be the clear favourites given Almeria’s woeful away record but the Catalans haven’t been at their best and there are plenty of goal threats in the away squad with winter addition Luis Suarez the man most likely to lead the line. This one could end up with a few goals but perhaps without a winner.
