Real Madrid vs Elche Preview
European and world champions Real Madrid welcome Elche to the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. Real Madrid’s confidence seems to be restored after the Club World Cup while struggling Elche will be eager to take a surprise three points back to the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero.
On Saturday, Real Madrid confirmed themselves as world champions for the fifth time in the club’s history. After beating Al Ahly in the semi finals, the Whites met Al Hilal in the final and won by five goals to three. A Karim Benzema golazo and braces from Vini and Fede Valverde handed Real the victory.
All things considered, this tournament victory was crucial to the mental state of the team, offering a break from the distasteful Vini situation that occurs week in week out and all the recent struggles in LaLiga. Players who were underperforming like Valverde, Modric and Tchouameni have all found a bit of form, and collectively, the team looks sharper.
It’s also always a boost to add another trophy to the cabinet, especially with it being the club’s 100th piece of silverware. However, it won’t feel quite so significant should they fail to beat Elche and reapply some pressure on Barca.
In their most recent match, Elche secured their first victory of the 2022/23 LaLiga season. They beat Villarreal 3-1 and the players, fans and coaching staff were all understandably elated with this achievement. Though they still leaked chances, it was an impressive performance from Los Franjiverdes. Each player gave it their all and the quality was there to match it.
The probability of them staying up is minimal. They’re currently 12 points adrift of safety with 20 games played and the goal is still to remain in LaLiga, which is still mathematically possible. But at this point, Elche must fight for the badge and fans throughout the globe which will restore some pride and self belief. What better way to do that than a victory against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu?
