Sevilla vs Mallorca Preview

Sevilla stadium

Sevilla and Mallorca face off at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan this weekend with the hosts looking to extend their winning streak in front of their own fans. Sevilla are by no means out of danger yet, but victory here would signal the clearest signs yet that there is light at the end of the tunnel after a miserable season so far.

It feels like Jorge Sampaoli has done enough in recent weeks to put an end to talk of another coaching change, in the short-term at least. Three straight home league wins have eased them out of the relegation zone, although only just. It is worth noting that those three wins came against the current bottom three in the league with the 3-0 victory over Elche the only one that was truly convincing.

Sevilla were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline last time out though, capitulating in the 2nd Half against an impressive Barcelona at Camp Nou. That result won’t define their season but fixtures like this one might. Sampaoli does at least have some fresh recruits to call upon now and overall the squad feels stronger after a brighter January transfer window with the return of loanee Lucas Ocampos also adding to their attacking threat.

This is a Mallorca side that has won away to Rayo Vallecano and Villarreal this season, both teams currently in the top six. However it’s also one that has lost 2-0 at both Getafe and Cadiz since the World cup with all three away league games since the break ending in defeats to nil. That’s in complete contrast to their home form which has been excellent with four straight 1-0 wins in Palma meaning they are just 3 points off the European places heading into this weekend.

Victory here really would get Mallorca fans dreaming of Europe. However the suspicion remains that they may fall just short in that regard, although a mid-table finish would still represent an excellent season. There is a clarity and identity to this Mallorca side that is so often lacking when it comes to their opponents here, but they will struggle to truly kick on and challenge for 6th or 7th without improving a goals return of just 0.8 per game in LaLiga this term.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 1-0 Mallorca

5 of Mallorca’s last 7 league games have ended with 1-0 scorelines and a repeat wouldn’t be a big surprise here with Sevilla hardly firing on all cylinders. It wouldn’t be a massive upset in truth if Mallorca grabbed the goal rather than Sevilla but their away form has been poor and with Jorge Sampaoli’s side finding a bit of momentum at home at last, Sevilla look marginally the more likely victors.
