Getafe vs Rayo Vallecano Preview

Sunday’s LaLiga action commences with a derby in the Madrid Community. Rayo Vallecano are at the Coliseum and they’ll be in confident mood having climbed up to 5th with their Monday night win over Almeria.
Getafe might just be feeling a bit better about themselves too after their draw at the Metropolitano last weekend. Enes Unal scored a late penalty to seal a point, ending a 4 game losing streak in LaLiga in the process. The Getafe board could easily have given in to fan pressure to replace Quique Sanchez-Flores, but the 58 year old is still under pressure with Getafe only one place off the bottom heading into this weekend.
They haven’t really had a massive injury crisis or anything of that sort to deal with this season, although Mauro Arambarri’s recent absence was significant. Therefore it’s hard to put your finger on what has gone wrong at Getafe given they looked to have recruited quite well with Luis Milla a good midfield addition in the summer. Sanchez-Flores has struggled to strike the right balance between defensive solidity and a bit more attacking spark, but he’ll need to find some solutions fast with some important games against fellow strugglers on the horizon.
As for Rayo, there briefly seemed to be a danger that they might lose their coach this week with Andoni Iraola linked with the Leeds vacancy. It’s no surprise to see other clubs come calling for Iraola given the exceptional job he has done in Vallecas. However Rayo will be desperate to ensure he at least sees out this season and should they qualify for Europe, you’d imagine he could be tempted to stay for one more campaign.
That’s a real possibility now after a 2-0 win over Almeria on Monday moved Rayo above the likes of Real Betis and Villarreal. They have a really settled side and despite their natural attacking intent, it’s also one that can defend with clean sheets in 3 of their last 4 league matches. They’ll make the short trip to Getafe full of confidence and hopeful of another victory.

Getafe would probably have been fancied to finish above Rayo before the season but they are 14 places behind them heading into this weekend which tells you plenty about the contrasting seasons these clubs are experiencing. Getafe are not a lost cause though and they’ve competed well against the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in recent weeks and look capable of getting another point here.
