Sevilla vs Elche Preview

Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan

This is another massive game for Sevilla as they bid to edge clear of an unlikely relegation battle. At no point in the first half of the season has their football suggested they belong much higher up this league but this is the first opportunity they really have to give themselves a bit of breathing space on the bottom three.

That’s after climbing out of the drop-zone thanks to Ivan Rakitic’s dramatic late penalty sealed a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Cadiz last weekend. Crucially the Sevilla fans have continued to support the team in recent home games, even if protests have taken place before and after matches. That will give Jorge Sampaoli’s side a lift and they’ll be firm favourites to make it 3 straight home league wins here, having not won at all on home soil this season until this current streak.

There was a midweek setback as Sevilla exited the Copa del Rey in Extra Time at Osasuna. There were some positives in the performance which included a goal for Youssef En-Nesyri who is yet to score this term in LaLiga. The Moroccan striker who scored 18 times in the 2020/21 LaLiga season could have a big role to play as Sevilla look to move clear of trouble while Lucas Ocampos is also back at the club following an unsuccessful loan stint at Ajax.

Elche’s relatively limited transfer business meanwhile, suggests their board has already resigned themselves to relegation. With just 6 points to their name from 18 games that’s understandable and they’ll be winless at the halfway point in the campaign if they fail to leave the Andalusian capital with three points.

There are at least a few minor positives heading into this game in that they’ve avoided defeat in their last two matches. A draw at Cadiz was followed by another 1-1 scoreline at home to Osasuna. It was actually a Sevilla player who netted their equaliser in that game but Jose Angel Carmona also picked up a booking and he’ll be unavailable to face his parent club this weekend.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-0 Elche

Back-to-back home league home wins will have given Sevilla a much needed confidence boost and they should fancy this against LaLiga’s bottom club. Elche are having a miserable season and despite the relative highs of successive draws, will struggle to take anything from this game.
