Osasuna vs Atletico Madrid Preview

These are good times to be an Osasuna fan with Jagoba Arrasate leading a European push in LaLiga whilst they made the Copa del Rey Semi-Finals for the first time in 18 years with a victory over Sevilla in midweek.
El Sadar was rocking for that game which was decided by Abde Ez’s strike in Extra Time. It should be loud again here and Osasuna will have to fancy their chances in this game. Whilst making progress in the cup, they’ve remained solid in LaLiga this month with 5 points and only 1 goal conceded in their 3 league games. That goal against came last weekend as they were denied victory away to bottom club Elche.
That would have been a minor disappointment for Arrasate but he has managed to use his squad quite well during this busy period. There is even competition amongst the goalkeepers with Aitor Fernandez having done well enough to nudge ahead of Sergio Herrera in LaLiga. The likes of Ante Budimir, Ruben Garcia, Darko Brasanac and Aridane Hernandez will all be hoping to rotate into the team here having not made the starting XI in midweek.
Atletico Madrid’s cup tie also went to Extra Time although they’re at a slight disadvantage having played a day later. Unlike their opponents, they are without that winning feeling to take into this game after Real Madrid came from behind to seal a 3-1 win in the derby at the Santiago Bernabeu, a result which effectively ends Atleti’s season in terms of potential silverware.
It felt like rock bottom for Diego Simeone who was greeted with loud sarcastic chants from the Real Madrid fans calling for him to stay. The chances of Cholo’s reign extending beyond this season have certainly decreased following that result. It’s hard to know what his plans are right now but it’s possible the club may make the decision for him if results don’t improve in LaLiga, although Atleti do remain just inside the top four heading into this matchday following one of their best performances of the season last weekend against Real Valladolid.

Score Prediction: Osasuna 1-0 Atletico Madrid
Atleti’s last 3 away games in the league have seen them lose to Cadiz and Mallorca, whilst only drawing at Almeria. This will be tougher than all of those games and there may well be a bit of fatigue too after their exploits with 10 men on Thursday night. There’s every chance Osasuna claim another big scalp here.
