Cadiz vs Mallorca Preview

Cadiz stadium

This is a big game for both Cadiz and Mallorca. Sergio’s team has to find a way to start winning a few home games which has been a problem again this season while Mallorca could potentially announce themselves as surprise European contenders here given victory would move them level on points with Real Betis who are currently 6th.

Cadiz are 9 points worse off than their opponents but they would climb out of the relegation zone with a win. However they never seem confident when on home soil in the kind of game where the onus is on them to dictate the tempo. It took Cadiz until March to win a home league game last term and they’ve only one victory so far this season at the Nuevo Mirandilla.

Sergio’s men have gone 6 league games without losing at home though, so this is no longer an easy place for visiting teams to come and win as was certainly the case in the opening weeks of the 2022/23 season. Cadiz also have some fresh blood to count on with three January additions including Gonzalo Escalante and Roger Marti who should both be capable of pushing for a starting role.

Mallorca meanwhile are still reaping the rewards of a strong summer transfer window and haven’t found the need to do much business this month. They spent in the region of €13m combined on Predrag Rajkovic, Pablo Maffeo and Vedat Muriqi and all three have proved value for money. Muriqi alone would surely now be worth well in excess of that sum having netted 8 times already this season in LaLiga.

Javier Aguirre can be very content with the work he has done in Mallorca too with a team that was unconvincing defensively even in the backend of last season, now one that seldom concedes poor goals. Indeed only three teams have let in fewer goals than the 16 shipped by Mallorca this term and they shouldn’t have too much to fear here against the league’s joint worst attack.

Score Prediction: Cadiz 0-0 Mallorca

It’s very hard to see many goals in this. Both sides rank in the bottom four for goals scored this season in the Spanish top flight and despite their higher league position, it’s hard to see Mallorca coming here and suddenly throwing all caution to the wind. There’s a good chance this will end up as Cadiz’s 6th draw in the space of 7 home games.
