Sevilla vs Cadiz Preview

Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan

There’s an Andalusian derby to round off Saturday night in LaLiga and it’s a really big game at the bottom of the table too. There is real pressure on Sevilla’s coach and players as we approach the midpoint in the season with Jorge Sampaoli’s team in the relegation zone.

There is potential for the atmosphere to turn really toxic at the Sanchez-Pizjuan if Sevilla do not collect all three points here. They did finally manage to win a home game as they saw off Getafe last time out in LaLiga here but immediately backed that up with another abject performance in the 2-1 defeat at Girona. They weren’t much better in the Copa del Rey in midweek but edged into the Quarter-Finals with a 1-0 win at Alaves.

The cup is providing something of a welcome distraction to their league woes but with a strong field left, it’s hard to see this Sevilla side going all the way. Their performance levels haven’t really picked up since the World Cup as many were hoping and Sampaoli is a man under pressure with his team languishing in 19th place heading into this matchday and there has been limited evidence of any real improvement under his leadership.

Cadiz meanwhile continue to be awkward opponents. Any notion that Sevilla will just show up here and be too strong for Sergio’s team is hard to buy with Cadiz having lost just 2 of their last 12 league fixtures. After a sloppy start, they’ve once again found a way to at least be tough to beat even if there are obvious limitations when it comes to their attacking play.

We saw evidence of the latter in their 1-1 draw at home to Elche last time out as they struggled to exert dominance at home to the rock bottom club. However they are much more comfortable in these kinds of situations where the onus will be on Sevilla to boss things and try to break them down. Cadiz can take confidence from a 1-0 win at Valencia in their most recent away game and they will make the short trip to Seville with real belief.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 1-1 Cadiz

Sevilla just don’t convince at either end of the pitch really and they even seem to lack any real identity or clear direction which is strange for a Sampaoli team. Cadiz are more than capable of coming here and getting a result which would pile on the pressure for their Andalusian rivals with another coaching change by no means out of the question.
