Barcelona vs Getafe Preview

After a successful week in the cups, Barcelona are back at Camp Nou this weekend with Getafe the visitors. It’s a good opportunity for the Catalan giants to open up a 6 point lead at the top of LaLiga which would add to the pressure on Real Madrid who visit San Mames shortly after this game.
This is very much a two-horse title race and to that extent, the ease with which Barcelona beat Los Blancos in the Supercopa Final last weekend will at the very least be a useful morale boost for Xavi and his team. It was also a much needed first trophy for the Barça boss and while by far the least significant of those they are gunning for this term, it’s certainly a good start to 2023.
The performance of Gavi was particularly encouraging in that game and it feels like there is a bit more clarity about what Barcelona’s strongest eleven looks like now which certainly wasn’t the case a few months back. With Frenkie de Jong also showing some promising signs, it seems Xavi has found a way to get his four main midfielders into the same side and it appears to be working.
Getafe aren’t likely to offer the strongest of tests and come into this following successive defeats against struggling teams in the shape of Sevilla and Espanyol. The pressure is building on Quique Sanchez Flores and the Getafe boss could at least do with a positive performance from his team, although a result does seem unlikely.
The South Madrid outfit are one of four teams on 17 points from 17 games in a congested bottom section of the table. They’ve failed to build on a strong second half of last season and the transition to a more technical side hasn’t really gone to plan. Nemanja Maksimovic is seemingly out of favour while Mauro Arambarri is injured so they have a slightly different profile of midfield players currently to what we’ve seen from them in recent years.

Robert Lewandowski is still suspended for Barcelona with Ansu Fati set to get a start in attack. It’s an opportunity for Fati to stake his claim for more regular action but it’s only 7 goals in 5 league outings for Barcelona heading into this so they aren’t really putting teams to the sword right now. They should claim a solid win nonetheless here.
