Cadiz vs Elche Preview

Cadiz and Elche meet in a bottom of the table clash on Monday night in LaLiga. Elche are bidding for their first win of the season while Cadiz will see this as one of their best opportunities to put an important 3 points on the board in front of their own fans.

There were similarities between the way the two teams started the season. In both cases it was fairly disastrous with Cadiz even less convincing than Elche as they lost their opening 5 games without scoring. However unlike their opponents here, Cadiz quickly found a way to turn their fortunes around with an improved defensive structure ensuring they have lost just 2 of their 11 league games since then.

While they have drawn plenty, Cadiz have also managed to win 3 games, although one of those was at the Nuevo Mirandilla, the surprise 3-2 triumph over Atletico Madrid. At times they look more comfortable when the onus is on the opposition to dictate the game and that was largely the case last time out as they claimed an excellent 1-0 win at Valencia despite only enjoying a 26% share of possession.

As for Elche, it just goes from bad to worse with the appointment of Pablo Machin, their third coach of the season already, having little impact so far. They’ve lost both league games under him with a 1-0 home defeat to what was an equally out of form Celta Vigo side last time out, a crushing blow to any hopes they might have had of staging some kind of revival.

Right now, Elche appear to be battling not for survival, but to avoid being one of the worst LaLiga teams of all time. With just 4 points from 16 games, they are currently on course to fall short of some of the historical lows. They are currently on a 5 game losing streak in the league overall and have also been knocked out of the Copa del Rey by third tier minnows AD Ceuta.

Score Prediction: Cadiz 1-1 Elche

This bottom two showdown is unlikely to be high on quality but the expectation will be on Cadiz as the home team to take the game to Elche. That’s not something that comes naturally to this Cadiz side though and they may find this a trickier game than it appears on paper with Elche standing a decent chance of adding to their desperately low points tally.
