Girona vs Sevilla Preview

Sevilla make the long trip to Montilivi this weekend for what promises to be an entertaining game against Girona. Matches involving the Catalan club are usually a good watch with Michel’s side a real breath of fresh air in LaLiga so far this term with a positive approach adopted throughout.
The stats certainly back that up. Only Real Madrid and Barcelona can better Girona’s tally of 24 goals in LaLiga 2022/23 but only three teams have conceded more goals. Both teams have scored in a huge 88% of their matches and their attack-minded default setting is producing results with the newly promoted side unbeaten in 6 games heading into this match.
Their two matches since the World Cup have both ended 2-2. They might feel as though they should have won at least one of those games and certainly had the better opportunities in the draw at neighbours Espanyol last time out. The tendency to concede goals and let opponents back into games is the main negative for Girona but overall they look to be operating on a higher level than the majority of teams in the bottom half of this league with survival looking a very attainable goal.
Sevilla should also ultimately have too much quality to still be in a relegation battle come the final weeks of the season. They still aren’t playing particularly convincing football but did get an important first home win of the season last time out against Getafe. That will give Jorge Sampaoli some encouragement with 4 points collected from their 2 games since the break following a draw in Vigo.
The Andalusians are also starting to get more players back from various fitness and suspension issues. We’re starting to get a few more clues about Sampaoli’s preferred players and system but we could see further departures and arrivals before the month is out. Isco has already been released while young defender Jose Angel Carmona has joined Elche on loan. French defender Loïc Badé is the only addition to date.

Score Prediction: Girona 2-2 Sevilla
Between them this season, Girona and Sevilla have a record of just 1 clean sheet in total from a combined 32 games. That tells you plenty about what direction this game may head in with goals certainly to be expected. Girona are missing key man Taty Castellanos though so we should see Cristhian Stuani get the nod in attack and all in all, we ought to get a relatively even game which could end level.
