Mallorca vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid travel to the Balearic Islands this week in need of three points to help lift spirits after a miserable start to the season. It won’t come easy though against a disciplined Mallorca side that is proving tough opposition for most sides.

The hosts have taken 7 points from their last 3 games including two excellent away wins against Valencia and Villarreal. They were too good for Quique Setien’s Yellow Submarine at the weekend with goals from Vedat Muriqi and Amath Ndiaye sealing an impressive 2-0 win at the Ciutat de Valencia.

Home wins have been a bit harder to come by though. Indeed Mallorca have only won once so far this term in front of their own fans while only Sevilla and Elche have worse home records. That’s something Javier Aguirre will be keen for his side to improve on but overall he’ll be delighted that his side has already built up a decent advantage on the relegation places.

As for Atletico Madrid, there is plenty of soul searching being done right now with no clear explanation for their struggles this season. They are out of Europe altogether and haven’t found any kind of consistency in LaLiga. The latest setback was a 1-1 draw at home to Espanyol at the weekend as Diego Simeone’s side failed to make the most of playing against 10 men for more than an hour.

Rarely if ever has Simeone’s status as Atleti boss come under quite so much scrutiny. However it’s not as though the wheels have completely come off with Atletico Madrid still in 3rd place heading into this matchday, the position they were widely expected to occupy again this season. It is true that this squad should be capable of much more, both in terms of performance levels and results and they will need to show more when LaLiga returns from the World Cup.

Team News & Possible Lineups

Possible XI: Rajkovic – Costa, Copete, Valjent, Raillo, Giovanni – Baba, Antonio, Galaretta – Muriqi, Kang-in (5-3-2)

Coach: Javier Aguirre

Atletico Madrid

BANNEDGimenez, Felix

Possible XI: Oblak – Reinildo, Hermoso, Savic, Molina – Saul, De Paul, Kondogbia, Llorente – Griezmann, Morata (4-4-2)

Coach: Diego Simeone

Score Prediction: Mallorca 0-0 Atletico Madrid

This game features two coaches who prioritise defensive foundations before looking to do anything more adventurous. Only 1 of Mallorca’s last 8 games has produced more than 2 goals and this feels like it will be tight and low-scoring too. It could even end goalless unless we get a moment of inspiration or well-worked set piece to break the deadlock.
