Porto vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid are in Portugal this Tuesday for a matchday 6 Champions League group stage clash. They were also in Porto at the equivalent stage of last season’s competition and won to secure progress into the last 16 but it’s a different scenario this year with 3rd the best Atleti can hope for heading into this game.

That’s the result of an incredible finale to their home clash with Bayer Leverkusen last week. The referee initially blew for Full-Time only for VAR to award Atleti a penalty and  a potential Champions League lifeline. Needing to score to stay alive, Yannick Carrasco’s penalty was saved and Saul hit the bar with the rebound as the game ended as Atleti exited the competition in bitterly disappointing fashion.

This wasn’t even a particularly difficult group on paper so it really has been a poor campaign with just 2 points from 4 games since winning at home to Porto on matchday 1. Things got even worse for Diego Simeone and his team as they lost 3-2 at lowly Cadiz at the weekend. A truly miserable start to the season could reach a fresh low as they need to at least match Bayer Leverkusen’s result just to qualify for the Europa League.

Porto have qualified for the last 16 after an excellent 4-0 win away to Club Brugge last week. They are still fighting for top spot in the group though so we can expect a strong eleven from the Portuguese champions here and they will have their eyes on the three points which would be enough for 1st place should Brugge drop points in Germany.

This has been a really strange group in many respects with Porto losing 4-0 at home to Brugge on matchday 2. They were without a point at that stage so it has been a remarkable turnaround from Sérgio Conceição’s side that has enabled them to qualify with one game to spare. They are missing a couple of players to suspension here though and they have lost 4 of their 5 Champions League meetings against Diego Simeone’s Atleti, drawing the other.

Score Prediction: Porto 2-0 Atletico Madrid

It’s tough to know what to say about Atletico Madrid at this point other than it has been an incredibly disappointing campaign so far with their hopes in the two big competitions already effectively over. They have tended to perform better in the tougher away games in LaLiga but right now they must be so low on confidence and it’s hard to fancy them against a Porto side that takes momentum into this and will be hungry for the win as they target top spot in the group.
