Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Real Betis entertain Atletico Madrid in one of the standout fixtures this weekend in LaLiga. Both sides have identical records of 20 points from 10 games heading into this which is a decent return but both struggled in midweek and could only draw games they were expected to win.
For the third straight away game in LaLiga, Betis were reduced to 10 men and failed to score. This time the red card didn’t come until deep into Injury Time in Cadiz but it was a damaging one in terms of this game with Sergio Canales sent off. Manuel Pellegrini had elected to leave his star midfielder out of the starting eleven in the game which ended 0-0 with a view to keeping him fresh for this one.
Canales’ absence is always a blow but it’s compounded at the moment with Juanmi and Nabil Fekir carrying injuries. The latter is nearing fitness and Pellegrini will be hoping the Frenchman is able to at least play some part as they’ll be short on creative options if not. Betis can at least take confidence from a 100% home record in LaLiga this season. No other side can match that.
Only Real Madrid have a better away record than Atleti though. For all the criticism that has come their way this season, some of which has certainly been deserved, Diego Simeone’s side have got some excellent results on their travels. They’ve recorded wins away to Sevilla, Valencia and Athletic while their only dropped points on their travels came in a respectable draw against Real Sociedad.
With Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann now looking like the clear first choice pairing in attack, Atletico Madrid shouldn’t really be struggling for goals but the midfield continues to lack balance and a 1-1 home draw against Rayo in midweek added to their coach’s woes. They also have a huge fortnight ahead in the Champions League and Atleti really need to find an extra gear for these decisive fixtures.
