Real Betis travel to the Italian capital on Thursday for a showdown with Roma, one of the standout fixtures in the Europa League group stage. The results of this game and next Thursday’s return clash in Seville may determine who ends up winning Group C to advance directly to the last 16.

Betis are already in a strong position to do that having won their opening two games. They were 2-0 winners in Helsinki on matchday 1 before edging an entertaining five-goal game against Ludogorets last time out at the Benito Villamarin. Manuel Pellegrini has rotated so far in this competition but may well opt to name something closer to his strongest eleven here.

They come into this game on the back of a setback though. Having won 7 of their opening 8 games in all competitions this season, Betis suffered a 1-0 defeat in Vigo in LaLiga at the weekend. Gabri Veiga struck early on for the Galicians and Luiz Felipe’s 20th minute red card meant a comeback was unlikely for Betis although they did compete well with 10 men.

The likes of Guido Rodriguez and Nabil Fekir were only among the substitutes in Vigo but should come into the eleven here for this showdown with Roma. Jose Mourinho’s side are the Conference League holders so they’ve plenty of recent pedigree in European competition and should come into this game full of confidence following their weekend 2-1 win at the San Siro against Inter in Serie A.

Unlike Betis, they did lose one of their opening two games in this competition with a 2-1 defeat in Bulgaria against Ludogorets on matchday 1. That means there is greater pressure on Roma here and they really need to target the three points if they are serious about trying to win this group. Their main dangerman is Paulo Dybala who has made a flying start to life in Rome following a high profile summer move from Juventus.

Possible Lineups

Roma: Patricio – Ibanez, Smalling, Mancini – Spinazzola, Matic, Cristante, Celik – Dybala, Zaniolo – Abraham (3-4-2-1)

Betis: Bravo – Miranda, Felipe, Pezzella, Ruibal – Carvalho, Rodriguez – Rodri, Fekir, Canales – Willian Jose (4-2-3-1)

Score Prediction: Roma 1-1 Betis

This promises to be a good game and a high quality one between two strong sides that will have ambitions of going far in this competition. Both sides have potential match winners but there may be an element of getting a feel for one another too in the early stages with another meeting next week. It’s a tough game for Betis but they look a confident side right now and may just nick a very useful point.
