Sevilla vs Borussia Dortmund Preview

Sevilla head into Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund with all sorts of uncertainty both on and off the pitch. They need to somehow focus on the job at hand in a game that feels like a “must win” if they are to stand a realistic chance of progressing into the knockout stage.
Julen Lopetegui is expected to be in the dugout but Jorge Sampaoli is being strongly tipped to take over after this game. It’s a bizarre situation and an extension of what has been a year of poor decision making by the Andalusian club. Lopetegui certainly deserves better treatment given the huge contribution he has made over the past three years but he is certainly not exempt from blame for what has been a very poor start to the 2022/23 season, following on from a bad second half of 2021/22.
The latest setback was a 2-0 loss at home against Atletico Madrid at the weekend. They were very much second best in that game against Diego Simeone’s side who haven’t exactly been pulling up any trees this season either. It’s 1 point from 2 games in the Champions League so far ahead of this decisive double-header against Dortmund which may well determine who finishes 2nd in a group that Manchester City are strongly expected to win.
Dortmund did give City a real test three weeks ago, with the German side 1-0 up heading into the final ten minutes at the Etihad thanks to Jude Bellingham’s strike. However the Premier League champions fought back to win 2-1 leaving Edin Terzić’s side sat on 3 points after their win over Copenhagen on matchday one.
They haven’t been perfect this season by any means though and were beaten 3-2 in Cologne in the Bundesliga at the weekend. That was their third league defeat of the season with three goals conceded in each of those games so there are clearly some defensive frailties that Sevilla could look to exploit and there is clearly no Erling Haaland to worry about either this season but the Germans will still travel confident that they can inflict further punishment on Sevilla.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 1-3 Borussia Dortmund
Sevilla are so far short of the standards they’ve set in recent years, that it feels like they simply don’t belong amongst the European elite right now and their weaknesses are likely to be exposed whenever they come up against top opposition. Dortmund may not be one of the absolute strongest sides in Europe but they should have enough to win what may be Julen Lopetegui’s final game as Sevilla boss.
