Club Brugge vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid are in Belgium on Tuesday night for an important Champions League group stage game. Club Brugge are the surprise leaders of Group B after two matches and could put one foot into the knockout stage with another victory here.
Before a ball was kicked, Brugge were expected to be the weakest team in this group and Diego Simeone would have been targeting maximum points from his side’s two meetings with the Belgian champions. As it turns out, they may just prove Atleti’s main rivals in their bid to top this group and this is a very important game.
Atleti have won one and lost one so far in this competition with late drama in both games. They secured a remarkable 2-1 win over Porto on matchday one with all three goals coming in Second Half Stoppage Time. Next came a trip to Germany and a 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in a game that was scoreless heading into the final ten minutes.
Los Rojiblancos have not fully convinced so far this term in domestic or European competition but they did record a morale boosting victory at the weekend, winning 2-0 at Sevilla. Goals from Marcos Llorente and Alvaro Morata saw off the Andalusians with Simeone’s switch back to a back four paying off. We may see a repeat here as Atleti look to join their opponents on 6 points at the top of this group.
Brugge have already shown they will be no pushovers though. Having edged past Leverkusen at home on matchday one, they produced a stunning performance in their second group game, going away to Porto and winning 4-0. Former Barcelona forward Ferran Jutgla was among the scorers for a team that is not blessed with many star names, at least not at this level.
Carl Hoefkens’ side were brought back down to earth with a bit of a bump in their subsequent league game, losing 3-0 at 10-man Standard Liege but they come into this one on the back of a 3-0 win of their own over Mechelen. It’ll be interesting to see how they approach this, with a draw probably a good result but they’ll also know that they can put themselves in a very commanding position in this group by making it 3 wins from 3.

Score Prediction: Brugge 1-2 Atletico Madrid
Atleti’s move to a back four was probably overdue and it did help them produce a better performance as they saw off Sevilla at the weekend. While their opponents haven’t been in great shape, winning at the Sanchez-Pizjuan is always a real confidence boost for any team and they look capable of backing that up with another strong performance and potentially three important points here.
