Villarreal vs Barcelona Preview
LaLiga F reaches matchday 3 this weekend, although after the opening weekend’s games were called off, it’s only really matchday 2. It sees defending champions Barcelona travel to Villarreal for this game at the club’s Ciutat Esportiva training complex.
Villarreal are not one of the real powerhouses in the female game. They could only finish 12th last season, averaging just under a point per game which was enough to ensure they did steer just clear of the relegation places. They were rock bottom after 12 games though so it still resembled an impressive recovery, although they were on the wrong end of a convincing 8-0 scoreline in this fixture last term.
The challenge here will be to try and be more competitive this season, although inevitably this is a game where they will be up against it. They had a tricky game last weekend too, going down 2-0 away to last season’s runners-up Real Sociedad. Privately coach Sara Monforte would not have been devastated by that outcome given they conceded 4 in both games against La Real last term.
Barcelona’s title defence got underway with a 2-0 win over Granadilla Tenerife. Goals from Geyse Ferreira and Caroline Hansen settled the game although they did have to wait over an hour for the breakthrough. For a side that scored 4 or more in all but one of their home league games last season, it was a slightly underwhelming start although the Catalans are still missing star player Alexia Putellas to injury.
There was a debut for Euro 2022 winner Keira Walsh in that game with the England international playing 72 minutes. She should add another dose of quality to this all conquering team although the preparation for this game hasn’t been ideal with many Barcelona players caught up in a storm which has seen a host Spanish internationals demand the sacking of national team coach Jorge Vilda, a move that has drawn an angry reaction from the Spanish Football Federation.
Score Prediction: Villarreal 0-2 Barcelona
Barcelona weren’t at their dominant best last time out and may just take a bit of time to find their feet again this season after a number were involved heavily during the summer tournament in England. Villarreal should be competitive but like last weekend Barcelona’s class ought to eventually show.
