Sporting Gijon vs Ibiza Preview

Sporting Gijon and Ibiza meet in the Friday night game this week in LaLiga SmartBank. The hosts have the chance to move into the play-off places with a win but Ibiza could also jump 8 places were they to leave El Molinon with 3 points.
It’s going to be interesting to watch Sporting this season and they are widely expected to have a much stronger campaign this time around. Abelardo is back at the helm after a five year absence and hoping to repeat some of the success he had during his first stint as Sporting coach when the Asturian club clinched promotion and went on to spend two years in the top flight.
He made a strong start this time around with Sporting collecting 8 points from their opening 4 matches. However back-to-back defeats since then signal the honeymoon period is definitely over. Their most recent home game ended in a shock 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Racing while they were beaten 1-0 at Zaragoza last time out.
As for Ibiza, they are a small but ambitious club trying to establish themselves at this level. Like their opponents, a coaching change took place in the summer with Javier Bareja replacing Paco Jemez. A return of 7 points from 6 games so far represents a mixed start for the new man overall but the pressure has been considerably eased by back-to-back wins heading into this one.
One of those victories came in Asturias only last weekend. They went to Oviedo and won 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Ekain Zenitagoia. That ensures they have momentum coming into this game and a few of their summer additions may have to be patient before getting more involvement. That includes former Celta winger Nolito who is yet to make his first start for the Balearic Island club.

Score Prediction: Sporting Gijon 1-0 Ibiza
Ibiza will be the more confident side heading into this one but overall Sporting do have more quality and certainly should have the better season. The recent defeats will have been something of a wake-up call but they ought to have enough about them to respond well here and potentially claim a narrow win.
