Bayern Munich vs Barcelona Preview

One of the most eye-catching fixtures of the Champions League group stage takes place on Tuesday at the Allianz Arena as European giants Bayern Munich and Barcelona meet. For the visitors it’s a chance to right some of the wrongs of recent years which have featured several heavy losses against this opposition whilst sending out a message to the rest of Europe that they mean business this year in this competition.
The aggregate score from the 3 meetings in the 2020’s so far reads a staggering 14-2 in Bayern’s favour. The two goals Barcelona scored both came in the 8-2 Quarter-Final defeat two years ago while they lost both meetings 3-0 in the group stage last term, a big factor in their exit from the competition before the knockout rounds.
There are several significant differences this term though. The biggest is that Robert Lewaondwski will be lining up for rather than against Barça. His presence alone feels sufficient that at the very least the Catalans are a team to be taken seriously this season in the Champions League but they are stronger across the pitch following a busy summer of recruitment.
The early signs are promising and Barcelona come into this game following five straight wins with 3+ goals scored in all of those games and only two conceded. There have been defensive cracks at times still though and Xavi will be well aware that the opposition here is on a totally different level to anything they’ve faced so far this term.
Losing Lewandowski was clearly a massive blow for Bayern. He has effectively been replaced by Sadio Mané who led the line in the German side’s 2-0 win at Inter on matchday one. The former Liverpool man has already netted four times for his new side and poses a different kind of threat to the Pole but overall this is still a Bayern side that is packed full of energy and players of high quality.
Like their opponents, they opted for some light rotation at the weekend ahead of this game, although could only manage a 2-2 draw against Stuttgart. That was a third straight draw in the Bundesliga for Julian Nagelsmann’s side and therefore Barcelona are not the only team with something of a point to prove here.

Score Prediction: Bayern Munich 2-2 Barcelona
Barcelona are flying right now but this is a significantly tougher test than they’ve faced so far this season. At the very least, we should see much more from Barcelona than we did in the two group meetings last season. It’s already very obvious that they are a significantly stronger team now and with Bayern not firing on all cylinders, the Catalan giants look capable of getting a result.
