Villarreal vs Elche Preview

Levante stadium

There’s a derby in the Valencian region of Spain this weekend and it’ll be a slightly odd affair with the match effectively taking place on neutral territory at Levante’s Estadi Ciutat de Valencia while construction work is carried out at Villarreal’s Ceramica.

Villarreal’s prospects of the strong season they are being tipped for may to some extent hinge on their ability to turn it into something like a home for the next few months. They have already played one game there this season, beating Hajduk Split 4-2 in the Conference League but it’ll be interesting to see just how many Villarreal supporters do travel to Valencia for these next few home games which could just give visiting teams some hope.

Right now though, Villarreal look strong wherever they are and they’ve taken 7 points from their opening 3 league fixtures, all of which were away. They could quite easily have extended a 100% start to the season at the Coliseum last weekend but couldn’t quite find the breakthrough against a stubborn Getafe side. They are in Conference League group stage action this coming week but Unai Emery is expected to prioritise LaLiga over that competition.

There has been some business done between these two clubs this week with Elche left-back Johan Mojica making a €5.5m move to Villarreal. Elche quickly plugged that gap by signing 22 year old Nicolás Fernández Mercau from San Lorenzo, the fourth Argentine player they have added this window.

With just 1 point from their opening 3 games, there is some pressure on Elche to get things going as a slow start can quickly mean a relegation battle. They were competitive in the home game with Real Sociedad last weekend but slipped to a 1-0 defeat with the visitors opening them up a little too easily at times. There would have been plenty for Francisco to work on this week and he will know his team will need to defend well if they are to get a result here.

Score Prediction: Villarreal 2-1 Elche

After a bright start to the season, Villarreal will be the confident team here and they clearly are the stronger side on paper. Unai Emery will know it’s important to start life at their adopted home with a positive result and they ought to get the win against an Elche side that looks like they may be among the relegation candidates this term.
