Mallorca vs Girona Preview

There’s an interesting match-up to kick things off on Saturday as two sides who would be expected to be in and around the relegation scrap meet. Both teams have already recorded their first wins of the season and will see this as an opportunity to potentially add a second.

Mallorca come into this game following a real confidence boost last week. They put in an impressive performance in Vallecas, beating Rayo Vallecano 2-0 with goals from forward duo Vedat Muriqi and Lee Kang-in. They are entirely different players but linked up quite well in the game and may now get a run of starts together so it’ll be interesting to see how that pairing can develop over time.

Overall, there are still some doubts about Mallorca and whether they’ve really done enough to strengthen this summer, but they do appear to have found some value in the market. You’d certainly worry for them were Muriqi to get injured but they feel like a settled outfit now and there is a clarity about what they want to do under Javier Aguirre. They’ll head into this game as favourites with home advantage.

Girona by comparison are a bit more of a work in progress after a host of summer signings came in whilst those that remain are having to adjust to a higher level of football. They’ve won one and lost two so far and Michel might be relatively content with that return as he will feel as though this relatively youthful side should improve over the coming weeks as they get used to playing together.

They certainly looked like a team with a genuine goal threat in their impressive 3-1 win over Getafe. However they couldn’t back that up last time out, going down 1-0 to Iago Aspas’ strike in their home game against Celta Vigo. You suspect we may get quite a bit of inconsistency from Girona as Michel tries to figure out his best eleven and this will be a good test of their current level.

Score Prediction: Mallorca 2-1 Girona

Both these teams appear to have enough of a threat up front to suggest they will score goals and that’s key when it comes to any club’s chances of staying afloat. There should be chances at both ends here but Mallorca look slightly ahead of Girona right now in terms of how settled they are as a team unit and they might just edge this, particularly with the visitors missing a host of players due to injuries.
