Getafe vs Villarreal Preview
Sunday’s LaLiga action commences at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez where two sides who have made very contrasting starts to the season clash. It’s two defeats from two games for Getafe while Villarreal have won all four matches so far this term in all competitions.
It’s not just the results, but the manner of the defeats that will be concerning for Quique Sanchez Flores. Getafe are a side that have tended to pride themselves on being tough to play against and hard to break open but they’ve shipped six goals so far this season and have looked a soft touch at times. They were really poor on Monday night, going down 3-1 at newly promoted Girona.
The tale of their season so far is one of new signings struggling to fit in and defensively it feels like a significant downgrade on last season when Mathías Olivera and Villarreal loanee Jorge Cuenca formed part of their back five. Monday’s loss at Montilivi saw new left-back Fabrizio Angileri get sent off while Domingos Duarte, who has effectively taken Cuenca’s place, conceded an own goal. Enes Unal was once again the only real bright light with the Turkish international scoring one and having another ruled out but overall it was a desperately poor team display from a side who were being tipped to have a good season.
Villarreal were also expected to go better domestically this season and so far they have certainly lived up to that. They showed real quality and composure to win 2-0 away to Atletico Madrid last weekend, a statement victory which highlights their top four credentials this term. All in all, Unai Emery will be a very happy man right now with his team able to rotate heavily but still make comfortable progress in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night.
With six more European matches now guaranteed between now and the turn of the year, Villarreal may look to add one or two players over the coming week but it’s possible they could still cash in on a big asset like Yeremy Pino or Arnaut Danjuma if a big offer comes in. Emery will be happy enough with his squad right now though so won’t feel the need for any significant changes after such a bright start.

Getafe really don’t look good defensively right now and they will be forced into another change here with Angileri suspended. New signings Omar Alderete and Damian Suarez have been carrying injuries and could potentially improve things if passed fit but you still wouldn’t fancy their chances against a red hot Villarreal side that could make it three wins from three away games to start the season in LaLiga.
