The opening game on Sunday comes from the Nuevo Mirandilla and it should be a cracking atmosphere in Cadiz with home fans still in something of a celebratory mood after their great escape last season. They may well struggle again this season after a relatively quiet summer but will be hoping to compete against top six hopefuls Real Sociedad.

Sergio did a wonderful job in guiding Cadiz to safety despite a difficult run-in at the back-end of last season. His side were disciplined and competed physically and in terms of fitness with supposedly superior teams and that helped them pick up a number of surprise results. The former Real Valladolid boss will hope that momentum can spill over into the new season but it may be tough to keep that kind of intensity up over 38 games.

The summer transfer window has seen Cadiz prioritise keeping players who were on loan last season. The likes of Victor Chust and Ruben Alcaraz have returned on permanent deals and are likely to be important parts of this team this season. Otherwise they’ve mostly targeted free transfers with Joseba Zaldua the most notable arrival and he should take Carlos Akapo’s place at right-back after the Equatoguinean moved to the United States.

Real Sociedad have spent a fair bit of money this summer by contrast, bringing in Brais Mendez, Take Kubo and Mohamed-Ali Cho. With key man Mikel Oyarzabal still out injured, we can expect two of those players to start this game with Mendez and Cho the likely picks. The latter comes for a hefty €11m fee but is only 18 years old and may need a bit of time to adapt to the Spanish league after his time in Ligue 1.

Mendez should slot more comfortably in and Imanol will be hoping he can provide a goal threat from midfield. Scoring goals was Real Sociedad’s main problem last season with their return of just 40 in LaLiga, worse than two of the three relegated clubs. They will need striker Alexander Isak to have a better season in front of the goal and the young Swede is certainly capable of that.

Real Sociedad have significantly more quality but Cadiz should still be in good spirits after their successful run to survival at the end of last season. The crowd will be up for this and given it may take Real Sociedad a bit of time to find their groove with two new players coming into the team, the hosts look capable of getting a result.
