Ipurua is the stage for the second leg of this semi-final play-off between Eibar and Girona. The winner of this tie will face the winner of Saturday’s Canarian derby which will determine which of the four sides will be playing in the first division next season. 

The first leg on Thursday evening took place at Montilivi and saw Eibar grab a 1-0 victory despite being down to ten men for the entirety of the second half. Basque born midfielder Ager Aketxe broke the deadlock in the 28th minute with an outstanding goal, a left footed long-range effort which flew into the top corner. Eibar went a man down just before the break with Alvaro Tejero being shown a second yellow. Despite the disadvantage, the Basques defended astutely in the second half and Girona failed to create many chances, although striker Cristhian Stuani did go close with a header clipping the crossbar. 

Eibar will be pleased with the result and hopeful to advance and ultimately earn a place in next season’s LaLiga, although they will be disappointed having not already been promoted via the automatic spots. After a strong campaign, the Basque side headed into the final matchday top of the LaLiga Smartbank table. However, with Real Valladolid winning and Almeria drawing, Eibar conceded a late goal to bottom of the table Alcorcon to lose 1-0 and slip into third place. 

In spite of this, a 1st Leg victory away at Girona will give the club hope that they can still be promoted, albeit the hard way with Gaizka Garitano looking to take Eibar back to the promised land as he did back in the 2013-14 campaign. 

Girona were enjoying a reasonably successful season themselves and with only a couple of months left they had hope of grabbing an automatic promotion spot. However, after a poor end to the season (just 10 points from their final 8 matches), the Catalans fell down the table and may even consider themselves lucky to have edged Real Oviedo to the last play-off spot. 

Girona have only played in LaLiga for two seasons in their history, but both were in recent years. They were promoted in the 2016-17 season and relegated in 2018-19. Despite not being in the top flight for long, the Catalans were seen in a positive light with their fast-paced style of play and willingness to bring the game to the bigger sides.

Score Prediction: Eibar 3-1 Girona (Aggregate: 4-1 Eibar)

Eibar have a great record against Girona, winning the last 7 meetings which will give them confidence and given that and the advantage already with the Basques after the 1st Leg, it’s difficult to see why they will not progress here. Girona will be looking to put up more of a fight than they did on Thursday, but ultimately Eibar should have enough quality to put the tie to bed and advance to the final.
