Levante vs Real Madrid Preview

Levante match action

Sunday’s action in the Spanish top flight concludes in Valencia with Real Madrid making the trip to play Levante. The continued works at the Bernabeu mean Los Blancos won’t play at home until after the first international break but that in truth isn’t bad news given they ought to have more home games in the second half of the season when full houses will hopefully be permitted again.

The Levante fans that are in attendance here will be hoping to roar their team on to another surprise victory over one of Spain’s “big three”. They’ve managed quite a few of those during Paco Lopez’s time at the top and Madrid ought to know by now that this is not a team to be underestimated.

Levante started the season with a 1-1 draw at Cadiz. In the end it would have felt like a defeat after they conceded a 97th minute equaliser in Andalusia having taken the lead early thanks to another opening day goal from Jose Luis Morales. There was also a debut in that game for new signing Roberto Soldado in attack while the fit again Jose Campaña put in a really assured display in midfield which was certainly good to see and he’s sure to be key this season for Levante.

The Valencian side certainly have the tools to ask questions of this much changed Real Madrid defence and this ought to be a tougher game for Los Blancos than the one they had on the opening weekend. In Carlo Ancelotti’s first competitive game back, they recorded a 4-1 win at Alaves, a scorline which perhaps flattered Madrid slightly, but it was still a very good start to the season.

Both Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale got starts in attack and it looks as though Ancelotti may try and give the Hazard-Benzema-Bale front three a bit of continuity to start the campaign. If he can get Hazard and Bale back to even 80% of their best, Real Madrid will carry a significantly increased attacking threat this season but clearly keeping the pair fit will be half the challenge.

The other big questions for Real Madrid moving forward are in defence with David Alaba utilised at left-back in the opening game. That may be a temporary fix with Marcelo and Ferland Mendy carrying injuries but the Austrian’s versatility and quality will make him a valuable asset this season wherever he plays.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Levante Wins, 3 Real Madrid Wins.
  • Levante have beaten Real Madrid in each of the last 3 seasons in LaLiga.
  • They were 2-1 winners in the Spanish capital in the most recent meeting in January.
  • Los Blancos have won on 4 of their last 6 visits to Levante, winning this fixture 2-0 last term in a game played at the Ceramica.

Team News

Roberto Soldado has picked up an injury which will rule him out for a number of weeks. Dani Gomez and Sergio Postigo are also absentees for the hosts.

Few changes are expected for Real Madrid with Carlo Ancelotti hoping to build some consistency in terms of selection. They are expected to be without the likes of Toni Kroos, Dani Carvajal, Ferland Mendy and Marcelo to injury again. Luka Modric has also picked up an injury and will miss this with Isco perhaps coming in.

Predicted Levante Starting Lineup:

Fernandez – Duarte, Pier, Coke – Clerc, Melero, Campana, Son – Morales, Marti, De Frutos (3-4-3)

Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:

Courtois – Alaba, Militao, Nacho, Vazquez – Casemiro, Isco, Valverde – Hazard, Benzema, Bale (4-3-3)

Levante vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Levante 2-1 Real Madrid

Levante consistently raise their game against the big boys and this won’t be easy for Real Madrid. With the likes of Morales in their ranks, Levante have players who can produce moments of magic and they will ask questions of the visiting defence. There’s every chance Los Blancos will drop their first points of the season here and with no Luka Modric and most likely no Toni Kroos, there are suddenly a few doubts right across the pitch for Madrid and there’s a real risk could come unstuck against Levante once again.
