Villarreal’s strong summer recruitment continues with the addition of Pervis Estupiñán. The Ecuadorian was very impressive on loan at Osasuna in LaLiga last term and has agreed to join Villarreal on a bumper seven year deal.

Of all the clubs in LaLiga, it’s arguably Villarreal who are having the strongest summer in the transfer market. Having already bolstered their midfield with the additions of Dani Parejo, Take Kubo and Francis Coquelin, they’ve now added another player who was very impressive in this league last term.
Pervis Estupiñán was one of the new names to shine in LaLiga 2019/20, playing a key role as newly promoted Osasuna comfortably beat relegation. His dynamic displays at left back, captured the attention of a host of teams and the Yellow Submarine have done well to secure his signature.
The Ecuadorian may well have gone on to play in the Premier League this season were it not for Watford’s relegation, but instead he returns to LaLiga and the Estadio Ceramica on a long-term deal following a €16.4 million transfer.

If there was a weakness in this Villarreal team last season, it perhaps did lie in the full-back areas. The need for fresh blood at left back in particular was accelerated by Alberto Moreno’s ACL injury in pre-season and Villarreal couldn’t realistically have found a better replacement.
Estupiñán knows the league and is very much the modern day full-back. If he can continue to develop his game under the guidance of Unai Emery, he’s capable of making it all but impossible for Moreno to regain his place when he does eventually regain fitness.
Overall, it feels not just like a good replacement but a genuine upgrade for Villarreal. It’s the kind of signing which will help them close the gap to the top four which ought now to be their objective this season.
