This Sunday’s game gives Atletico Madrid the chance to move onto 9 points from 3 games which would represent the perfect start to the season following a summer of real change at the club. Eibar will be out to stop that from happening but the Basque minnows have never beaten Atleti in the top flight despite going mighty close in this fixture twelve months ago.

Atleti will have Diego Costa available here which presents boss Diego Simeone with a bit of a dilemma. He could opt to move Joao Felix into a wide role and bring Costa in alongside Morata or the former Chelsea man may have to bide his time despite a really impressive pre-season. Elsewhere Atleti also have Renan Lodi available again after suspension and he’ll be hoping his second game at the Wanda Metropolitano lasts a good deal longer than the first.

Eibar meanwhile have been slow starters with their two games against newly promoted opposition yielding just the one point, collected at Osasuna last weekend. They at least defended better in that match and they will need to be focused from the first minute here against an Atleti side that should be brimming with confidence having ended their Butarque curse with a 1-0 win at Leganes last weekend.

Unless either coach springs a surprise, this game should see both sides line up 4-4-2. Both Diego Simeone and José Luis Mendilibar rank amongst Spanish football’s longest serving bosses and there’s a healthy respect between the pair who have both pushed their respective clubs onto a new level, however Simeone has invariably come out on top whenever the two have met.

After back-to-back 1-0 wins, there is already a sense that this new era at Atleti is not going to bring a radical transformation in terms of the way they play. There has been the odd moment of magic from Joao Felix but essentially they remain the same well-organised, disciplined unit they always have been under Diego Simeone and they’ll be more than content to grind out another narrow victory here.
