This Friday’s game between Getafe and Alaves features two sides currently operating the top six of La Liga against the odds. At the halfway stage in the season, both clubs will know that if they can maintain their form a European challenge is by no means impossible and this fixture should give us a clue as to which of the pair are more likely to do that.
Alaves would shoot back up to 3rd place with victory. They responded well to losing key wingers Ibai Gomez and Jony in the build-up to their last match at Girona. The former was sold to Athletic Bilbao while Jony has picked up an injury which will keep him out here. Alaves still got a point in Catalonia without the duo but unquestionably their influence will be missed in the coming weeks with their back-up wingers not operating on quite the same level.
As for Getafe, their extraordinary away form continued last weekend with a 2-1 win at Villarreal. The hosts did miss a penalty and rattle the woodwork four times in stoppage time alone so you could say that Jose Bordalas’ men rode their luck but they did score a couple of excellent goals too. They also secured Copa del Rey progress this week so it’s going to be a very busy month for the South Madrid side and it will test their squad.
Both sides have selection problems here. On top of the recent problems out wide, Alaves will have to do without the suspended Víctor Laguardia at centre-back. That is a major blow as their defence has been exceptional this term. Getafe though are missing Dimitri Foulquier and Mauro Arambarri to bans so will also be forced into something of a reshuffle. Damian Suarez does at least return from a ban at right-back.

Of the two teams, Getafe have the greater squad depth which could be significant at a time when injuries and bans are starting to mount up. They’ve not really had to use it yet but a heavy summer of recruitment by their standards added some genuine depth to the squad which should come in handy during this busy month. We also expect Alaves to tail off slightly over the second half of the season with those wide areas far less threatening now following the events of the last fortnight. With home advantage, Getafe should have the edge here.

Both sides have some big physical players throughout the pitch but the trickery of in-form Angel Rodriguez could be a difference-maker.
