Who are the best Spanish players right now?

best spanish players

Having been crowned European champions in 2024, Spain are among the leading candidates to win the 2026 World Cup next summer. They have a deep talent pool to rely upon, with the best Spanish players shining not only in LaLiga, but in many of the other biggest leagues in the world.

Below, we’ve taken a look at the best Spanish players currently operating in the “big five” European leagues, according to their L15 (Last 15 match average) scores via Sorare’s scoring matrix.

If you’re not familiar with Sorare, it is a fantasy football platform with a scoring system that allocates points for virtually every action on a pitch – big or small. This includes everything from goals and assists to clearances, duels won and successful passes, while negative actions such as big chances missed and fouls result in deducted points.

Players receive a score out of 100 for every game. To feature in our rankings, they must have appeared in at least eight of their last 15 available fixtures which includes both club and international fixtures for the Spanish national team.

Best Spanish players – The top 5 ranked by their Sorare scores

5. Dani Ceballos, Real Madrid – 63.1

A forgotten man, even at his own club until very recently, Dani Ceballos has benefitted from the retirement of Toni Kroos last summer, to secure more regular game-time during the 2024/25 season.

He has made 10 starts in LaLiga and was selected in both legs of Real Madrid’s Champions League play-off tie against Manchester City. With a pass completion rate of more than 95% in both competitions, Ceballos has brought an element of control to the Madrid midfield, and it’s probably no coincidence that they’ve looked much less convincing since he succumbed to an injury at the end of February.

The 28-year-old should be fit again for the run-in, and he’s likely to have a big role to play with the former Real Betis man currently as important as he has been at any point in his time with Los Blancos.

4. Lamine Yamal, Barcelona – 65.7

The explosion of Lamine Yamal has been one of the stories in world football over the past 18 months. He’s unquestionably the most gifted of the current batch of young Spanish players, and he stands alone as the world’s top teenage talent.

Yamal was an integral part of the Spain side that won Euro 2024, with a stunning semi-final goal against France one of the moments of the tournament. The winger has developed his game further this season back at Barcelona, with more composure being displayed in front of goal which has enabled him to comfortably reach double figures for both goals and assists this term.

Already being talked about as a potential Ballon d’Or candidate, Yamal is part of an impressive Barca side that is in strong contention for domestic and European honours as the 2024/25 campaign nears its conclusion.

3. Iñigo Martinez, Barcelona – 66.2

Muchlike Ceballos, Iñigo Martinez would have been nowhere near any rundown of the best Spanish footballers a year ago, but the 33-year-old has been one of the best defenders in LaLiga this season.

He’s been a useful asset for Barca in terms of playing out from the back, and he even chipped in with a vital assist for Robert Lewandowski, as the Catalans came from behind to win their top-of-the-table showdown against Atletico Madrid on matchday 28.

Martinez also boasts the physical attributes that Basque centre-backs are typically known for, and he has formed a strong partnership with youngster Pau Cubarsi in the heart of the Barcelona defence this season.

2. Isco, Real Betis – 69.6

One of the most famous Spanish football players a decade ago, Isco virtually disappeared for a number of years as his Real Madrid career petered out in disappointing fashion. When a move to Sevilla in 2022 ended with a swift “mutual termination” of his contract, Isco’s time at the top looked as good as over.

However, in one of the great comeback stories, Isco has found a new lease of life since joining Sevilla’s bitter city rivals Real Betis in the summer of 2023. Looking leaner, sharper and hungrier, Isco has been outstanding in an advanced midfield role for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Even an injury which put paid to his hopes of earning a Spain recall at the Euros has not dampened Isco’s spirit. Fit again now, the 32-year-old is playing some of the best football of his career and has chipped in with nine goals in 18 appearances for Betis in all competitions so far this term.

1. Pedri, Barcelona – 74.5

Long touted as one of the most exciting Spanish footballers of his generation, Pedri is now really starting to deliver on all that early promise, with the 2024/25 season his best yet from an individual perspective.

While a lack of goals and assists means he sometimes goes under the radar in terms of gaining wider recognition, right now, he’s one of the first names on the Barcelona teamsheet under Hansi Flick.

While he’s still only 22, Pedri is already an experienced player having already passed 30 caps for the national team, while this is his fifth season in the Barca first team. Crucially he has largely avoided injury this term, and he has matured into a midfielder that is increasingly capable of running games from the centre of the park.

8Diego LlorenteReal Betis60.3
9Dean HuijsenBournemouth59.3

While the likes of Riqui Puig and Sergio Canales are posting higher scores in other leagues around the world, when it comes to Europe’s big five divisions, no Spanish player comes close to Pedri right now. In fact, at the time of writing, he’s the best performing player in Europe’s big five leagues over the past 15 games, of those that have made at least eight appearances.

Completing the top 10, Lucas Vazquez is a slightly surprising inclusion at six, and while the 33-year-old has obvious defensive flaws, his attacking output is still high from right-back for Los Blancos.

Nico Williams shone on the other flank to Yamal for Spain at Euro 2024, and the Athletic man has hit form in recent weeks, after a subpar first half to the campaign.

Defenders Diego Llorente and Dean Hujsen are next, with the latter making his Spain debut in the Nations League quarter-final first leg against the Netherlands. Alex Baena was an unused substitute in that game, and Villarreal’s assist king ranks 10th.
