Supercopa de España winners list – All the Spanish Super Cup champions

supercopa de espana winners

Initially a two-legged tie between the previous season’s winners of LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup has evolved into a four-team affair in recent years. There have been 10 different Supercopa de España winners since the inaugural tournament in 1982.

Previously, some similar competitions also existed in the 1940’s and 1950’s which featured the league and cup winners, most notably the Copa Eva Duarte which was last played in 1951 with Atletico Madrid defeating Barcelona in a one-off match.

However, these games are not generally considered to be part of the history of the Supercopa de España, and for the purposes of this article, we’re only considering matches during the Supercopa era (1982 onwards).

Barcelona have won the Supercopa de España the most times. Their 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in the 2025 final was their 15th triumph. That places them two clear of Los Blancos who have won the competition on 13 occasions, most recently in 2024 when they were convincing 4-1 winners in another Clasico Super Cup final.

The other eight clubs to have won the trophy have a combined total of just 13 titles between them, which highlights just how tough it can be for the other sides to emerge victorious in a tournament that invariably features at least one of Barcelona and Real Madrid, and in the four-team era, usually both.

Athletic Club were the last side to break up the domination of the “big two”. They beat both Real Madrid and Barca to claim their third title in 2021. Deportivo La Coruña have also won the trophy on three occasions, although not since 2002.

Atletico Madrid’s most recent Spanish Super Cup triumph came in 2014, following their LaLiga title win, but they’ve only won the competition twice.

Valencia, Sevilla, Real Zaragoza, Mallorca and Real Sociedad have also all won the trophy once, with La Real beating Real Madrid 4-1 on aggregate to win the first edition of the tournament back in 1982.

Real Madrid – 3 titles in a row (1988 to 1990)

Real Madrid’s most dominant era in domestic football in recent times, came during the late 1980’s. They were winners of LaLiga in five consecutive seasons between 1985 and 1990, ensuring their qualification for the Spanish Super Cup.

While the 1986 and 1987 tournaments were not played, Los Blancos won the Supercopa three seasons running between 1988 and 1990, defeating Barcelona twice over two legs, while they were automatically awarded the 1989 title having done the double the previous season.

Barcelona – 3 titles in a row (2009 to 2011)

On only one other occasion has a team won three Supercopas in a row. That was Barcelona who achieved the feat during Pep Guardiola’s golden era at Camp Nou.

Having won the trophy in 2009, 2010 and 2011, Tito Vilanova’s Barca were narrowly defeated by Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid on away goals in the 2012 edition, after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

The most successful players

There can be little doubt as to the identity of the outstanding player in Spanish Super Cup history. Lionel Messi holds all kinds of individual records.

He scored 14 goals in Supercopa matches, twice as many as his nearest rivals (Raul and Karim Benzema both scored seven for Real Madrid). Messi is also largely cited as the player to have won the trophy the most times, with eight titles, although he didn’t actually feature during Barca’s 4-2 aggregate win over Real Betis in 2005. His great nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo only won the Spanish Super Cup twice.

Messi’s Barca teammates Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta also won the competition on seven different occasions. Special mention should also go to winger Txiki Begiristain who was something of a Supercopa specialist, winning the trophy for a record three different clubs (Real Sociedad, Barcelona and Deportivo La Coruña).

In terms of the great individual performances in Supercopa finals, Messi, Vinicius Junior, Aritz Aduriz and Frederic Kanoute are among the players to have stamped their mark on the competition with decisive hat-tricks over the past 20 years.

A bit further back, Raul achieved the feat for Real Madrid, as did Francisco Higuera in an extraordinary 5-4 win for Real Zaragoza at Camp Nou in 1994, although it wasn’t enough to prevent a 6-5 aggregate defeat.

There have been some significant changes to the competition in recent years, with a move away from the traditional two-legged final between the defending league and cup champions.

Since 2020, it has been played as a four-team tournament with single-legged semi-finals and a final. The new format involves the top two from the previous season’s LaLiga, as well as the two cup finalists, with the 3rd placed team from the league qualifying whenever one of the top two also reaches the Copa del Rey final.

The competition has also moved from its traditional pre-season slot to January. Most controversially of all, it now takes place in Saudi Arabia rather than Spain, with a lucrative agreement in place to ensure that will continue to be the case until at least the end of the decade.

Real Madrid have been the most successful club in the four-team era, lifting the trophy three times in Saudi Arabia. However, Barcelona have won it in two of the last three years, with Clasico finals on each occasion.

The Supercopa de España 2025 champions will be hoping to defend their title next season, assuming they qualify for the competition.

Saudi Arabia will again be the setting for the Supercopa de España 2026 which is scheduled to be played in January once more. Different stadiums in Jeddah and Riyadh have been used for the tournament in the past, but at the time of writing, it’s unclear where next season’s matches will be played.
