The 2024/25 Spanish football season is nearly upon us and clubs up and down the country are busy assembling their squads for the new campaign. Below, we’ll take a look at all the LaLiga goalkeepers and the situation at each club.
The clubs are ordered by their finishing position last season with the three newly promoted clubs at the bottom. For each player we’ve included the number of league starts they made last term, their contract expiry and their L15 score on Sorare – an official LaLiga fantasy football and collection game.
Goalkeepers in LaLiga 2024/25 – Who will be the number 1’s?
Real Madrid
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Thibaut Courtois | 32 | 4 | 82 | June 26 |
Andriy Lunin | 25 | 21 | 38 | June 25 |
Andriy Lunin did a really good job of filling in for the injured Thibaut Courtois last season, comfortably seeing off competition from Kepa who was signed on loan with the view of being the Belgian’s temporary replacement. However Courtois recovered from his ACL injury in time to start the Champions League final ahead of Lunin, removing any doubt (not that there was much) about whether he’d regain his place.
Heading into the 2024/25 campaign, Courtois is the clear number one and, not for the first time, there is uncertainty as to whether Lunin will accept a back-up role at the Bernabeu or push for a move away for regular football. His reputation and market value was certainly enhanced by his performances last term.
Barcelona
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Marc-Andre ter Stegen | 32 | 28 | 48 | June 28 |
Iñaki Peña | 25 | 10 | – | June 26 |
There were also injury issues for Barca’s number one last term with Marc-Andre ter Stegen missing 10 games as Iñaki Peña filled in. The 25 year old did reasonably well without setting the world on fire and there was little doubt that Ter Stegen would regain his place when fit.
Despite failing to hit the heights of a brilliant 2022/23 campaign, the German remains one of LaLiga’s best goalkeepers and a certain starter this term with Peña set to be his deputy once more.
Girona
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Paulo Gazzaniga | 32 | 38 | 48 | June 27 |
Juan Carlos | 36 | 0 | – | June 25 |
Girona won plaudits from far and wide for their attacking play which catapulted them to a surprise top four finish last term, but Paulo Gazzaniga was something of an unsung hero in goal. The 32 year old started every game, with veteran Juan Carlos a virtually unused spectator who only saw serious action in the Copa del Rey.
Both players have signed contract extensions in 2024 suggesting it’ll be the same again this season with Gazzaniga likely to start league and Champions League matches.
Atletico Madrid
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Jan Oblak | 31 | 38 | 51 | June 28 |
Horatiu Moldovan | 26 | 0 | – | June 27 |
Atleti’s long-serving number one Jan Oblak was an ever present in LaLiga last season. The Slovenian has perhaps dipped slightly from the very high standards he was setting a few years ago when he was among the world’s elite, but he still very much has the trust and backing of Diego Simeone and should be the undisputed starter again this term.
There could be movement in terms of the back-up position with Horatiu Moldovan reportedly seeking a move away, despite only joining the club in January. The Romanian has been linked with the likes of Celtic, Rayo Vallecano and Pisa and we can expect another goalkeeper to come in should he leave.
Athletic Club
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Unai Simon | 27 | 36 | 53 | June 29 |
Julen Agirrezabala | 23 | 2 | 46 | June 27 |
Athletic are very well stacked in this position with Spain number one Unai Simon and one of the best young goalkeepers in LaLiga in the shape of Julen Agirrezabala. Simon was the clear first choice in the league last term but it was Agirrezabala who was responsible for guiding the Basque giants to Copa del Rey glory and a first major trophy in 40 years.
Heading into the 2024/25 season, which will bring with it Europa League football, Athletic suddenly have an issue with both players currently injured. Simon has undergone wrist surgery and may not return until December or January. Agirrezabala’s issue is not so severe but he still faces a race against time to be fit for the opening game of the season, meaning 20 year old B-team keeper Alex Padilla could end up starting the campaign.
Real Sociedad
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Alex Remiro | 29 | 37 | 64 | June 27 |
Unai Marrero | 22 | 1 | – | June 27 |
One of the safest number ones in LaLiga, Alex Remiro has started 35 or more games in the Spanish top flight in each of the last four seasons. The 29 year old also invariably starts La Real’s European games and was rewarded for another strong campaign with a place in Spain’s Euro 2024 squad.
Remiro looks certain to be the Real Sociedad number one again this term. Youngster Unai Marrero, who was handed a baptism of fire when he made his LaLiga debut in last season’s Basque derby defeat at San Mames, is expected to be the back-up once more.
Real Betis
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Rui Silva | 30 | 28 | 45 | June 26 |
Adrian | 37 | – | – | June 26 |
Fran Vieites | 25 | 3 | 61 | June 26 |
Manuel Pellegrini has tended to use his goalkeepers differently when compared to other coaches in LaLiga with Claudio Bravo and Rui Silva both featuring prominently over the past few years. The latter felt much more of an established number one last term though, starting 74% of Betis’ league fixtures and 41 year old Bravo has since been released in any case.
Silva has himself been linked with a move away, although there has been nothing concrete on that front which makes the Portuguese shot stopper the most likely first choice for Betis again this term.
Former West Ham and Liverpool keeper Adrian has returned to his boyhood club to most likely act as Silva’s deputy, although he may well see a decent amount of game-time in the Copa del Rey and UEFA Conference League. Fran Vieites could also compete for some of those minutes having impressed when called upon during an injury crisis last term.
Villarreal
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Filip Jorgensen | 22 | 36 | 51 | June 29 |
Diego Conde | 25 | – | 50 | June 29 |
Youngster Filip Jorgensen emerged as the Villarreal number one last season and while the Yellow Submarine ended up with the third worst defensive record in the division, little of the blame could be attributed to the 22 year old who had a pretty solid season, although he didn’t have much competition from an ageing Pepe Reina.
Jorgensen signed a new five year contract in June, although rumours about him moving to Marseille have picked up in recent days, while there has also been widely reported interest from Chelsea over the past 24 hours. Assuming Jorgensen stays, we can expect Diego Conde to be a competitive deputy with the 25 year old joining the club after a promotion winning season with Leganes where he was the number one.
Valencia
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Giorgi Mamardashvili | 23 | 37 | 54 | June 27 |
Stole Dimitrievski | 30 | 37 | 42 | June 26 |
Jaume Domenech | 33 | 1 | 37 | June 25 |
Giorgi Mamardashvili was outstanding again as Valencia achieved a 9th place finish last term, with the Georgian establishing himself as one of the top young goalkeepers in world football.
The 23 year old further enhanced his reputation at Euro 2024 and the Valencia hierarchy is clearly keen to cash in on their most prized asset this summer, although at the time of writing, no move appears close.
Stole Dimitrievski has joined Valencia from Rayo Vallecano, essentially as Mamardashvili’s replacement. The North Macedonian is though reported to have a clause in his contract enabling him to leave for a relatively small fee should Mamardashvili end up staying put.
Alaves
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Antonio Sivera | 27 | 34 | 55 | June 27 |
Jesus Owono | 23 | 4 | 52 | June 26 |
One of the surprise packages of the 2023/24 season, Alaves had a strong campaign with Antonio Sivera doing a good job between the sticks. With survival comfortably secured in their first year back in the top flight, 23 year old Jesus Owono was rewarded with starts in the final four games and mostly looked assured.
It’s set to be the same two keepers again this season for the Basque club with Sivera expected to be the first choice keeper with Owono hoping to compete should his form drop.
Osasuna
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Sergio Herrera | 31 | 32 | 51 | June 26 |
Aitor Fernandez | 33 | 6 | 46 | June 25 |
Sergio Herrera regained supremacy over Aitor Fernandez in the battle to be Osasuna number one last season, starting 84% of the club’s league games in another mid-table campaign for the Pamplona side.
A new season brings a new coach at El Sadar, with long-serving Jagoba Arrasate departing and former Espanyol and Mallorca boss Vicente Moreno arriving. He looks set to face the same decision as his predecessor in goal with Herrera likely, but not guaranteed, to start the new campaign ahead of Aitor.
Getafe
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
David Soria | 31 | 38 | 43 | June 26 |
Jiri Letacek | 25 | – | – | June 28 |
David Soria has been Getafe’s first choice goalkeeper since joining from Sevilla in 2018. He has started every league game in each of the last three seasons and has largely been reliable for the South Madrid side who finished 12th back under the guidance of Pepe Bordalas last term.
Despite rumours seemingly every summer about a potential move, Soria has stayed put and barring genuine interest from a bigger club, looks sure to be Getafe’s number one again in the 2024/25 campaign. He’ll have a new deputy though with 25 year old Jiri Letacek arriving from Czech outfit Banik Ostrava.
Celta Vigo
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Vicente Guaita | 37 | 26 | 40 | June 25 |
Ivan Villar | 27 | 12 | 37 | June 27 |
Ivan Villar started last season as Celta number one under Rafa Benitez, but an early red card in a 3-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid in October would be the catalyst for a change with Vicente Guaita taking over. The more experienced keeper kept his place even after Benitez was replaced by Claudio Giraldez with Villar not seeing league action again until a couple of what might be described as “token” late season starts.
The strong assumption is that Guaita will be the starting goalkeeper again for Celta this season, with Villar expected to warm the bench.
Sevilla
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Orjan Nyland | 33 | 24 | 47 | June 26 |
Marko Dmitrovic | 32 | 13 | – | June 25 |
Sevilla’s chaotic 2023/24 season ended with Orjan Nyland seeing off competition from Marko Dmitrovic for the number one jersey, following the summer departure of long-term number one Bono. The Norwegian did a reasonable job behind a defence that improved after a shaky start, but it’s all change again this summer at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan with Quique Sanchez Flores departing and former Las Palmas boss Garcia Pimienta the new coach.
That’s likely to bring with it a more patient, passing approach which Nyland will need to adapt to, but he looks best placed to start the season in goal. Dmitrovic has been linked with a move, potentially to one of the newly promoted teams, with Sevilla reportedly keen on bringing former Huesca keeper Alvaro Fernandez, currently a free agent, in as competition for Nyland.
Mallorca
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Predrag Rajkovic | 28 | 36 | 54 | June 26 |
Dominik Greif | 27 | 1 | 74 | June 26 |
Leo Roman | 24 | – | 58 | June 26 |
Pichu Cuellar | 40 | 1 | 47 | June 25 |
Mallorca have an embarrassment of goalkeeping riches with Predrag Rajkovic, the solid number one in the league last term, going on to start for Serbia at Euro 2024. Dominik Greif put a tricky spell at the club behind him to star in the team’s run to the Copa del Rey final while youngster Leo Roman had an excellent campaign on loan in the Segunda Division at Real Oviedo.
Javier Aguirre has departed, so new boss Jagoba Arrasate must decide who his starting goalkeeper will be. Rajkovic is still firmly in pole position, but the obvious assumption is that at least one of Mallorca’s three main goalkeeping options will depart before the window shuts.
Interest from Genoa in Leo Roman suggested it would be the 24 year old, but those talks have reportedly broken down, leaving the Balearic Islanders back at square one and they’ll likely consider serious offers for any of their keepers until one departs.
Las Palmas
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Alvaro Valles | 26 | 37 | 46 | June 25 |
Jasper Cillessen | 35 | – | 49 | June 26 |
Dinko Horkas | 25 | – | – | June 28 |
Alvaro Valles was one of the standout goalkeepers in LaLiga last season. He was particularly impressive in the first half of the campaign where he showcased his ability with the ball at his feet and as a fine shot stopper. He was one of the primary reasons why Las Palmas avoided the drop on their return to the top flight.
The 26 year old’s contract expires next summer though and it looks very likely that his club will seek to cash in while they still can in the coming weeks. Valles is one of the key moving parts in LaLiga’s goalkeeping merry-go-round and has been linked with the likes of Villarreal and Real Betis, as a potential replacement for their current number ones should they depart.
In the experienced Jasper Cillessen, Las Palmas already look to have signed his replacement while 25 year old Dinko Horkas has also joined on a free transfer from Lokomotiv Plovdiv and is expected to be the number two.
Rayo Vallecano
Age | LaLiga 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Dani Cardenas | 27 | 1 | 33 | June 27 |
Miguel Morro | 23 | – | – | June 25 |
Stole Dimitrievski started all but two of Rayo Vallecano’s league matches over the past two seasons, with no other keeper really getting a look in at the Estadio Vallecas over that period. The 30 year old ran his contract down though and has moved to Valencia on a free transfer, leaving Rayo looking a bit light in the goalkeeping department.
The Madrid club are expected to bring in a new keeper before the window closes and that’s likely to be in a starting capacity assuming they can find a suitable target. They’ve been linked with Brazilian Helton Leite who is a free agent after leaving Antalyaspor but there is little sign that a deal is close.
They head into pre-season with Dani Cardenas as the most senior goalkeeper and likely starter on the opening weekend should nobody arrive. Miguel Morro, who played nine times on loan at Villarreal B in the second tier last season, is his current back-up.
Leganes
Age | LaLiga Hypermotion 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Juan Soriano | 26 | 39 | 48 | June 27 |
Leganes conceded just 27 goals as they won the Segunda Division title last term, but their starting goalkeeper has since departed. Diego Conde is now a Villarreal player after completing a €4m transfer while Dani Jimenez has also left on a free transfer to join Huesca.
That means the South Madrid side have had to start from scratch in the goalkeeping department this summer and they’ve signed Juan Soriano, who was second tier Tenerife’s number one last term, on a free transfer. Another goalkeeper will certainly arrive, but it’s unclear at this point whether that’ll be an outright starter or somebody who may initially play second fiddle to the 26 year old.
Real Valladolid
Age | LaLiga Hypermotion 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Andre Ferreira | 28 | – (14 in LaLiga) | – | June 27 |
Alvaro Aceves | 20 | 14 | 41 | June 25 |
Long-serving Jordi Masip started 31 of Real Valladolid’s 42 Segunda Division matches last term with Brazilian John getting the nod for the other 11 games. Neither player remains at the club though, meaning Real Valladolid are another newly promoted team where there’s a lot of change on the goalkeeping front.
They have already forked out €1m to convert Andre Ferreira’s loan from recently relegated Granada into a permanent deal. The Portuguese keeper was unconvincing in 14 starts for the Andalusians in LaLiga last term and ended the campaign as back-up in the second tier at the Jose Zorrilla which suggests he’s unlikely to be the number one for Real Valladolid this season.
20 year old Alvaro Aceves is a big prospect and saw Segunda Division game-time on loan at Eldsense last season, but is reportedly refusing to train back in Valladolid as he bids to force a move away. All things considered, it seems clear that a new goalkeeper will arrive before the summer window ends and most likely a new number one.
Espanyol
Age | LaLiga Hypermotion 23/24 Starts | L15 | Contract Expiry
Joan Garcia | 23 | 18 | 63 | June 28 |
Fernando Pacheco | 32 | 28 | – | June 26 |
The experienced Fernando Pacheco was the Espanyol number one for the majority of last season, but he lost his place to Joan Garcia in March and the youngster did not relinquish the jersey. A series of impressive displays from the highly rated Garcia helped Espanyol over the line as the Catalans won promotion via the play-offs.
They head into the new season with both keepers still on their books and you sense Manolo Gonzalez would be happy if it stays that way when the deadline shuts. Despite reported interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal, Garcia should be the Espanyol number one in the 2024/25 season. The 23 year old is currently on Olympic duty with Spain.
There is greater uncertainty around Fernando Pacheco’s future. He was signed from Almeria as a starting, top flight goalkeeper the season before last and is on a significant salary as a result. Espanyol could therefore seek to move him on and replace him with a more budget-friendly back-up to Garcia.
This info is accurate as of 22nd July 2024 but may change before the end of the Spanish transfer window on 30th August.
