Alaves vs Osasuna Preview

There’s a derby clash in the Basque Country on Wednesday as Osasuna travel to Vitoria to take on Alaves. These two sides are dead level on 35 points and victory for either here would effectively guarantee their top flight status for another year with both sides already boasting a healthy advantage on the relegation zone.

Neither side has exactly hit the ground running since the restart. Alaves were hammered 6-0 on a disastrous afternoon in Vigo at the weekend. The 1st Half sending off of Martín Aguirregabiria didn’t exactly help matters but they were already 2-0 down by that point. They can though take confidence from having claimed a deserved Basque derby win in their only home game so far in this final segment of the season against Real Sociedad last week.

Osasuna by contrast are still waiting for their first victory since the resumption but will be encouraged by the failure of the bottom three to make up serious ground on them. They too have been on the wrong end of a heavy defeat, losing 5-0 at home to Atleti last week and their weekend showing wasn’t a great improvement as they lost 2-0 at Valencia.

Both sides are likely to make changes here given recent struggles and the hectic schedule. Fernando Pacheco, who saw red in Alaves’ first game back at Espanyol, may return in goal for the hosts while Ruben Duarte should come in at full-back. Osasuna meanwhile may shift to a back four having utilised a five man defence in recent tough games.

Alaves vs Osasuna Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-0 Alaves

Alaves look capable of bouncing back here from the despair of their defeat in Vigo. They played well in their most recent home game against high-flying Real Sociedad and with just 3 defeats in 15 home games this term, they’ll be happy to get back to Mendizorrotza even if there won’t be any home fans present. Osasuna still have more injury problems than any other team in LaLiga and it’s tough to see anything but a tough end to the season for them and they may just be edged out here by an Alaves side that boasts greater firepower with Joselu and Lucas Perez leading the line.
