The second round of fixtures in the Segunda Division following the restart kicks off on Monday night. First up there’s a meeting between Ponferradina and Elche, two sides that are currently separated by just 6 points in the table. Despite that, there is still a sense that the objectives of these two clubs for the remainder of the season are very different.
The hosts are currently in mid-table but only have a 5 point cushion on the relegation zone. In what is their first season back at this level, they will only really be targeting survival and they will perhaps see three wins as all they need to get to that goal, or perhaps two victories and a host of draws. 44% of their league games this term have finished level including their first game back – a 0-0 draw at Real Oviedo on Friday.
Elche on the other-hand can afford to take a few more risks between now and mid July and really target the victories that would fire them into the play-offs. They currently do hold that final play-off spot but will be well aware that there is a long way to go in the season. They would have been disappointed to have only drawn 1-1 at home to struggling Extremadura in their first game back with Jonathas’ 1st Half goal being cancelled out after the break.
That result may have just halted Elche’s momentum to some extent given they’d won back-to-back games heading into the lockdown. Ponferradina meanwhile will be hoping they can still find some kind of home advantage, despite the absence of fans. They’ve only lost once at the Estadio El Toralín all season.

Ponferradina are pretty strong on their own ground and will back themselves to get a result here against an Elche side that also tends to travel quite well with their average of 1.56 points per away game better than their home return. It promises to be another tight Segunda match and a draw looks likely.
