Los Franjiverdes’ midweek loss to fellow relegation battlers Alavés and Huesca’s win over Athletic means that Elche’s relegation will be confirmed if they lose to Cádiz on Sunday. It’s a meeting of two promoted sides – the hosts have already confirmed their stay in the Primera for another season but a lot has to go in the visitors’ favour if they are to avoid the drop. Cádiz don’t have anything to play for in the final two matchdays except league position. They can break the record of their highest-ever LaLiga finish of 12th place achieved in the 1987-88 season. El Submarino Amarillo are 12th at the moment too with 43 points, only three less than 9th placed Athletic, and so a top-10 finish cannot be ruled out. After consecutive wins over Granada and Huesca which secured their Primera status for next season, Álvaro Cervera’s men suffered a 3-2 loss on Sunday at the hands of Osasuna in Pamplona. On a positive note, Cádiz have scored in all of their last four games and goals aren’t as hard to come by now as was the case for most of the season. It’s an impressive feat to be 12 points above the drop zone in their first season back in the top-flight, managing so without their passionate fans. Elche’s 2-0 loss in the critical relegation six-pointer against Alavés on Tuesday means that they already have one foot in the Segunda for next season. Joselu and Luis Rioja combined together twice to score for the Basques on either side of half time. And although Lucas Boyé tested Fernando Pacheco on a couple of occasions, the Alavés keeper was always equal to it. But overall, the hosts surprisingly never really got going in the match. Elche have been decent at home, especially after Fran Escribá’s arrival, and have scraped together some important home wins against bottom-half sides. On Tuesday however, Alavés’ hunger and firepower was just too much for them. It’s all hands on deck now for Los Franjiverdes. If they are to survive this season, it will have to be as dramatic as their promotion last season. Their form away from the Martínez Valero is pretty miserable – only two points in 2021 and no wins since October. On Sunday, winning is the only option for Elche. Elche are almost the opposite – the higher the pressure gets, the worse they do. Furthermore, their terrible away record and recent form do not suggest three points in Andalusia for the visitors. The best-case scenario looks like a draw – a result which may not relegate Elche officially, but can make it a formality come the final matchday.
