Barcelona Women vs Wolfsburg Women Preview

It’s the Women’s Champions League Final this weekend as Barcelona and Wolfsburg face off in Eindhoven. It’s a third straight final for the Catalan club and they are favourites to win the trophy for a second time.
They are set to be backed by 8,000 fans in the Netherlands as Barcelona seek to cap another excellent season. They won Liga F at a canter again, although they did lose their first league game in more than two years on the final day of the season, going down 2-1 at Madrid CFF. That wasn’t the ideal way to go into a huge Final like this but overall they have still looked like the best team in Europe this season.
Their Champions League campaign saw them fire in 29 goals in the group stage to advance into the Quarter Finals where they comfortably dismissed Roma 6-1 on aggregate. It was tighter in the Semis with Chelsea giving Barça a real run for their money in the 2nd Leg at Camp Nou but a 1-1 draw was enough to seal a 2-1 aggregate win for Jonatan Giráldez’s side who are hoping to rectify their defeat to Lyon in last season’s Final.
In Wolfsburg, they face another familiar foe. This is the fourth time the clubs have been paired together in the latter stages of the Women’s Champions League. The German side advanced in 2014 en-route to winning the competition and did likewise in a one-off Semi-Final in 2020 before losing to Lyon in the Final. Barcelona got their revenge last year though with a 5-3 aggregate win in the last four which included a dominant 5-1 victory at Camp Nou in the 1st Leg.
Wolfsburg are unbeaten in this season’s competition but they have had to fight hard in the knockout stage to make it this far. They edged out PSG 2-1 on aggregate before seeing off Arsenal 5-4 in Extra Time of the Semi-Final. They are through to a sixth Final as a result but had to make do with 2nd place in the Women’s Bundesliga this season, with Bayern Munich pipping them to the title.
Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Wolfsburg
This promises to be a really competitive game between two very strong sides. Barcelona’s minor dip in form at the end of the season is a slight concern but as long as they handle the occasion well and bring their A game, they should have that bit of extra quality which could settle this.
