Real Betis vs Real Sociedad Preview
This is a huge game in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification. Real Sociedad (4th) are six points better off than Real Betis (5th) heading into the match and an away win here would put the Basque side in complete control of the battle to join the “big three” in next season’s competition.
Betis have tended to enjoy positive results against La Real under Manuel Pellegrini though. They’ve won four of the last five meetings with the only exception being a 0-0 draw in Donostia last season. They were 2-0 victors in the reverse fixture this term and that kind of superiority may just give Betis a slight psychological edge here.
Inconsistency has made it tough for Betis to sustain a strong top four challenge though and they lost again at the weekend, going down 3-2 against Osasuna in Pamplona. That was a third defeat in four league outings, but they have won over half of their home games this season in LaLiga and will be able to rely upon the support of a big Benito Villamarin crowd which could make all the difference here.
In truth, Real Sociedad could also be placed in the inconsistent category in recent months. While they have managed to get some important wins at the Reale Arena, they’ve lost 3 of their last 4 on the road and that includes recent 2-0 defeats against direct European rivals in the shape of Villarreal and Athletic Club.
They did win 2-1 at the weekend against Rayo but it wasn’t a particularly convincing showing. Imanol’s men only had one shot on target in the game, but scored twice thanks to an own goal from Florian Lejeune which granted them an 81st minute winner. We saw an interesting selection call from the Real Sociedad boss with Ander Barrenetxea preferred to Brais Mendez in midfield in that game and the 21 year old will be hoping to keep his place here.

Score Prediction: Real Betis 2-1 Real Sociedad
For one reason or another, Manuel Pellegrini has tended to get the better of Imanol in recent clashes between the sides and a repeat is very possible here. La Real haven’t looked entirely convincing in recent away games and while they are doing enough to stay in control of the battle for 4th, they don’t look like running away with the race and Betis may well eat into their lead with three points.
