Girona vs Real Madrid Preview
Girona and Real Madrid clash on Tuesday at Montilivi. The Catalans famously beat Los Blancos 2-1 on this ground in their first ever league meeting in 2017 but they’ll be clear underdogs here as Carlo Ancelotti’s side come calling.
Girona have won their last two home matches to ease their way towards a position of total safety on their return to the top flight. Indeed, outside of the top four, no side has collected more home points than Girona this season which is testament to the challenge that could be in store for Real Madrid here.
However in truth this may turn out to be a decent time to visit this ground. Girona are dealing with an injury crisis that got much worse very quickly at the weekend with both Toni Villa and Aleix Garcia needing to be replaced within 12 minutes of their game at Real Valladolid – a match they went on to lose 1-0. Both of those players are out of this one with Michel missing seven players in total.
Carlo Ancelotti also has some selection issues, but he has a squad built for a long European run and some strong depth in most areas. Karim Benzema is the most notable absentee here and the Frenchman was probably due a rest in any case. Otherwise though, Real Madrid should be close to full strength with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric expected to rotate back in after weekend rests.
Los Blancos are enjoying a really good run, winning six of their last seven games in all competitions to nil. They aren’t going to win LaLiga but there seems to be a determination to ensure they go into the upcoming Copa del Rey Final and Champions League Semi-Final in good form and with plenty of momentum.

Benzema’s absence does offer a glimmer of positive news for Girona but the hosts are missing some key players and it’ll be tough for them here against an in-form Real Madrid, despite their excellent overall home record.
