Mallorca vs Real Sociedad Preview
Mallorca and Real Sociedad clash on Sunday in Palma with both sides looking to bounce back from recent setbacks. Both are enjoying strong seasons overall though with plenty to play for between now and early June.
The hosts are on the fringes of the European battle but suffered a big disappointment last weekend as they lost 1-0 at home to bottom club Elche. That brought to an end a 5 game winning streak at Son Moix for the Balearic side. They have beaten some good sides in front of their own fans and Javier Aguirre will be hoping it was just an off day.
His side’s chances aren’t helped here by the suspension to Vedat Muriqi. It’s hard to think of another player in LaLiga who is currently as important to his team as the Kosovo international. Muriqi has scored 10 of Mallorca’s 21 goals this term and also acts as the key target man who most of their attacks go through. Aguirre will be hoping his team can find a plan B here to get at this Real Sociedad defence.
La Real are not in good form with just 1 win from 6 in LaLiga. Their most recent league outing was a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to lowly Cadiz and they have since suffered a 2-0 Europa League defeat against Roma. That leaves them with a lot of work to do next week if the Basque side want to progress into the Quarter-Finals of that competition.
Imanol’s side are fighting hard for Champions League qualification via LaLiga though and with Elche visiting Donostia next weekend, they really need to rediscover their shooting boots and put some points on the board before the international break. That pause may offer a useful opportunity for most of these players to rest up and refresh ahead of the run-in as they battle the likes of Real Betis and Atletico Madrid for a top four finish.
Team News & Possible Lineups
Possible XI: Rajkovic – Copete, Raillo, Valjent – Costa, Baba, Ruiz de Galarreta, Maffeo – Kang-in, Dani Rodriguez – Kadewere (3-4-2-1)
Coach: Javier Aguirre
Possible XI: Remiro – Aihen, Le Normand, Pacheco, Sola – Zubimendi – Merino, Silva, Brais Mendez – Oyarzabal, Sorloth (4-1-3-2)
Coach: Imanol Alguacil
Score Prediction: Mallorca 0-1 Real Sociedad
With no Muriqi, it’s hard to know where Mallorca’s goal threat is going to come from with the rest of their squad contributing just 11 goals in 24 matches this term. Real Sociedad aren’t playing particularly well right now but they have players capable of producing the moment of quality that may settle this match.
