Real Madrid vs Al Ahly Preview
Real Madrid are in Morocco for the Club World Cup and they kick off their campaign with a Semi-Final against Al Ahly of Egypt on Wednesday. The winners will progress into the weekend Final with Los Blancos firm favourites to win the competition.
They are hampered by a host of injury problems though with three of their most important players missing with Thibaut Courtois, Eder Militao and Karim Benzema staying behind in Madrid. You could even argue that they are Real Madrid’s most important three players so Carlo Ancelotti will be hoping some of his younger players can step up and provide the impetus that leads Madrid towards another trophy.
Los Blancos won’t travel in particularly good spirits after they lost 1-0 at Mallorca in LaLiga at the weekend. Another win for Barcelona, and this time a really convincing one, suggests Real Madrid are going to have their work cut out if they want to successfully defend their league title. There are plenty of cup distractions though and they’ll be determined to avoid any slip-ups here.
Al Ahly qualify as the runners-up in the 2021/22 CAF Champions League. They are widely considered to be the most dominant African club, winning that competition in 2020 and 2021 before reaching the Final again last year. Coached by Swiss manager Marcel Koller, they are hoping to make history by reaching the Final of this competition for the first time after three 3rd place finishes in 2006, 2020 and 2021.
They’ve already won two ties to reach this point. They cruised past Auckland City 3-0 in the 1st Round before a tighter game against MLS outfit Seattle Sounders. It took an 88th minute strike from Mohamed Magdy to settle the game in favour of the Egyptian side but they will be expecting a very different task here.
Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Al Ahly
Real Madrid haven’t always breezed past their opponents in the Club World Cup but they do invariably find a way to win. That might be the case again here given the high profile absentees and their relative struggles in recent weeks but they’ll look to the likes of Vini Junior and Rodrygo to provide the attacking spark that should see off Al Ahly.
