Real Madrid vs Chelsea Preview

Inside Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano

Real Madrid have a really important game this Thursday in the UEFA Women’s Champions League as Chelsea visit the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. Avoiding defeat would set them up nicely for the potentially decisive trip to Paris next week but it won’t be easy.

Las Blancas made it into the last eight of the Champions League last season, which was some achievement given how recently this team was formed. However this is a tough group and they will do well to repeat the feat this term with just 4 points on the board from their opening 3 games.

They gave a reasonable account of themselves in the reverse fixture in London on matchday 3 but succumbed to 2nd Half goals from Sophie Ingle and Erin Cuthbert. Real Madrid have claimed 5-1 and 4-1 victories in Liga F since then but the elite European level is a significant step up in class and they’ve adopted a much more cautious approach in the Champions League to date.

It does feel like Real Madrid are going to be battling with PSG for 2nd place in this group. Chelsea have set the bar very high with 3 wins out of 3, 11 goals scored and none conceded so far. They can guarantee qualification with another win here and will be targeting another run to the Final having finished as runners up to Barcelona in 2021.

They do look like serious contenders having also looked very impressive in the English Women’s Super League this term. They hammered Leicester 8-0 in their most recent match and it’s 8 wins from 9 league games for them so far in the league.

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 0-2 Chelsea

Real Madrid are still a team in development, at least in terms of competing with the very best sides that the continent has to offer. Chelsea are certainly one of them and they look like they may be capable of repeating their victory when the sides met in London a fortnight ago.
