Sevilla vs Rayo Vallecano Preview

Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan

We return to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan this weekend for LaLiga action between Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano. The hosts have lost just one match in all competitions since Jorge Sampaoli took charge which represents a good start for the Argentine and he’ll expect his side to put three points on the board here.

To be truthful, Sevilla’s performances haven’t been significantly better since Sampaoli replaced Julen Lopetegui but they have at least stopped the rot and started to look like a team that can dig deep and get results again. They were 3-0 winners against Copenhagen in the Champions League in midweek and while they did exit the competition as a result of that, they have at least booked a place in the Europa League play-off round.

The hope will be that some of the obvious flaws are addressed in January with Sporting Director Monchi eager to make amends for some of the errors made over the past 12 months. That may help Sevilla be more competitive in Europe and climb the league but it does feel like they are going to have a real scrap on this season just to qualify for European competition next term.

Rayo Vallecano’s priority will be avoiding a relegation battle and right now they look well placed to do that. They hammered 9-man Cadiz 5-1 last time out and are currently 5 points better off than Sevilla as a result. They’ll be targeting one more win before the World Cup break which would push them onto at least 18 points and that would represent an excellent return from this early chunk of the season.

Andoni Iraola’s side are certainly one of the more entertaining teams to watch in the league and it’ll be really interesting to see how competitive they can be here. They’ve already gone to Camp Nou and the Metropolitano this season and taken results but they can be inconsistent with defeats and poor performances against the likes of Almeria and Mallorca.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-0 Rayo Vallecano

Sevilla may not be playing brilliantly but it feels like they’ve at least found some short-term solutions to some of those early season problems and there is a bit more belief around the place, even if the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan is hardly buzzing. Rayo tend to blow hot and cold and with Oscar Trejo missing to suspension, it feels like this may just go the way of the hosts.
