Real Madrid vs Girona Preview

Real Madrid and Girona meet for the first time in three years on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu. The home faithful will want their team to respond after the lacklustre loss in Leipzig on Tuesday. Meanwhile a point or three would boost Girona’s chances of getting out of the dreaded relegation zone.
Real Madrid’s unbeaten streak came to an end against The Red Bulls. Vini and Rodrygo’s goals weren’t enough to trump the home team’s three goals and amazing performance on the night. There’s been conflicting opinions on the performance from players and the manager. Thibaut Courtois believed that the team lacked intensity while Carlo Ancelotti thinks that it was a matter of Leipzig nullifying his team’s biggest strength; the counter attack. Nevertheless, that performance can be forgotten once Los Blancos get the job done against Girona.
Historically, whenever these two teams meet, it always seems to be a high scoring game. The most recent match in 2018 ended 4-1 in Real’s favour. Goals from Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale and a brace from Karim Benzema gave the Whites their victory.
An emphatic performance with loads of chances created, goals and exciting patterns of play will give Real the boost they need. A clean sheet will also be welcomed as those are really difficult to find at the moment for the champions.
Girona and Osasuna drew 1-1 at the Estadi Montilivi last Sunday. Kike Borja’s golazo was cancelled out by a 45th minute goal from David Lopez. Both teams had chances to grab a late winner but neither could take them. That result kept Girona in 18th place on nine points.
With the signings made in the summer, Girona should be capable of beating the drop. Though their current situation doesn’t mean that they will definitely be relegated, no one can deny that it’s been an underwhelming start to the season. Two wins from eleven is unsatisfactory, but having already faced Atletico, Betis, Real Sociedad and soon to be Real Madrid, it can surely only get better for Los Blanquivermells after this.

When a poor result arrives, Los Merengues usually respond well. They’ll want to give their fans a reason to forget their first loss of the season and regain momentum quickly as the World Cup is fast approaching. If Girona are quick with their transitions, they can get a goal or two, however ultimately Real Madrid should win this game and keep their place as the league leaders.
