Elche vs Getafe Preview
Matchday 12 in LaLiga concludes with a bottom of the table clash between Elche and Getafe. It may not be one for the purists but it’s a really important game for these two teams with both really in need of a victory.
Elche are still waiting for their first win of the season. It’s hard to envisage a situation where they went into the World Cup break still winless and went on to survive and they are already 6 points from safety heading into this match. Newly promoted duo Real Valladolid and Girona are their next two opponents so this really is crunch-time for Jorge Almiron’s side.
They have picked up 2 points from their 3 games since the change in coach but there hasn’t been a massive improvement in terms of performance levels. They were fortunate to take a 2-2 draw from their trip to Espanyol last weekend and Almiron has not found a cure for their defensive woes with 8 goals conceded under his guidance so far and Elche are also the team with the worst overall defensive record in the division.
Getafe have improved on that front with some important players returning to help tighten things up after a really poor start to the campaign. They come into this one on the back of three straight draws though and they will also see this as a really important period with Cadiz and Almeria their final two opponents before the World Cup.
In terms of quality, Getafe should have enough to avoid a relegation battle this season but Quique Sanchez-Flores hasn’t really found any continuity in the middle of the park yet. A fresh injury for Mauro Arambarri is the latest blow with the Uruguayan set to be missing until February. The plan right now seems to be to keep it tight at the back and hope Enes Unal can fire Getafe to victories with the Turkish striker by far their main dangerman at the other end.

This game is not likely to be a classic and it’s hard to pick a winner in truth. Both sides appear to have regressed since last season and while there is still a decent chance Getafe can start moving up the table, they are in the habit of drawing rather than winning games right now and we may see a repeat here.
