Cadiz vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Cadiz host Atletico Madrid at the Nuevo Mirandilla this weekend in a Matchday 12 clash in La Liga. The yellow submarine will be aiming to pick up some points to distract from what has been a very tough start to the season, whilst Atletico will be looking to grab a domestic result to distract from their poor European result in midweek.
Cadiz’ last outing was a 5-1 humbling at the hands of Rayo Vallecano in an extraordinary encounter which saw as many as three red cards. Cadiz were able to hold on through early pressure from Rayo, and Conan Ledesma was forced into an excellent double save in the 29th minute. After a VAR review, Isaac Carcelén was sent off for Cadiz and conceded a penalty which Isi Palazon slotted home. Right before the break, Alvaro Garcia smashed home an excellent but simple goal to put the capital side two goals to the good.
Sergio’s side failed to improve in the second half, and Ruben Alcaraz was sent off in the 62nd minute. Despite grabbing a goal for themselves and Rayo midfielder Randy Nteka being sent off, Cadiz would end the match humiliated after conceding three more goals, one of which was an excellent free kick from long range from Florian Lejeune.
Cadiz have had a very poor season so far, winning only one game and scoring five goals to the 22 they have conceded. The yellow submarine are usually known for their strong defence but with that aspect of their game lacking, Sergio seems unable to offer new ideas which is one of the main reasons Cadiz find themselves nineteenth in the table. Admittedly, the surrounding pack have not gained many points either, so a run of short form could see Cadiz shoot up the table.
Atletico come into this match after defeating Real Betis 2-1 in their last domestic appearance. There was really nothing of note to happen in the first half, but only two minutes after the break, Luiz Henrique smashed the ball into the top corner after a fine counter attack from Los Verdiblancos, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Not long after, Antoine Griezmann’s corner went all the way through to the goal past Rui Silva, giving the Frenchman his fourth goal of the LaLiga season and Atletico the lead.
With twenty minutes to go, Molina, Correa and Cunha combined down the right hand side and gifted Griezmann a one on one with the goalkeeper which the Frenchman slotted away with a finish that Silva probably should have kept out. Nabil Fekir scored an excellent free kick to put Diego Simeone’s on edge, and in added time Alex Moreno hit the crossbar with a header. However, Atletico held on and were able to grab all three points.
In midweek, Atletico were eliminated from the Champions League in controversial fashion after drawing 2-2 at home with Bayern Leverkusen, despite a strong second half performance from Los Rojiblancos. This result was a huge blow for Diego Simeone’s side, and they will now have to put full focus on their domestic campaign. Atleti currently sit eight points behind league leaders and city rivals Real Madrid, which is a large gap but not impossible for Los Colchoneros to catch up on and get themselves back into the title race.

Both teams aren’t in their best moment, but Cadiz’s record both in terms of points and goal difference is very poor and it doesn’t seem likely that they could get a win here. Furthermore, Atletico will be aiming to put their European disappointment behind them, so will likely bounce back here with a strong performance and take all three points back to the Spanish capital.
