Almeria travel to Butaque on the final day of the Segunda Division season, hoping to finally clinch promotion to the Primera. The Andalusians have had several close brushes with the big time in recent years, and once again let a major chance to clinch top flight football slip last weekend.

Leganes were hoping to get themselves in the promotion picture again this season too but it hasn’t quite worked out. They sacked club legend Asier Garitano in October with former Lugo boss Mehdi Nafti taking charge. The Tunisian has helped to improve things, winning 13 of his 31 games, losing just 8. It has been enough to steer Leganes well clear of danger but they are still 14 points off the play-off places heading into the final matchday.

As such, Leganes have been able to relax to some extent in recent weeks with little on the line. Their form has been predictably a bit patchy but they did put in one of their best showings of the campaign last time out, winning 3-0 at Ponferradina to end their opponents’ promotion hopes.

Only victory will guarantee Almeria promotion here, but there’s a strong chance a draw would also be enough given they hold the H2H advantage on 3rd placed Real Valladolid who they currently lead by 2 points. That may create a slight dilemma for Rubi and his team as to how best to approach this and he’ll certainly be keeping half an eye on matters elsewhere with many different permutations at play.

Almeria have been strongly tipped to win promotion in the previous two seasons following their high profile Saudi takeover and significant investment but have been guilty of falling apart to some extent late on, before also missing out on promotion in the play-offs. There was little sign of that this term. They reeled off 4 straight wins to nil to put themselves in a position where victory last weekend at home to bottom club Alcorcon would have clinched a place in the Primera. However they could only draw that game and only just managed to a point, meaning they now go into the final matchday with work to do.

Almeria had a golden opportunity to win promotion last weekend and you have to wonder what psychological damage that might have done to them, particularly given what has happened in the last two years. This is a tricky game to have on the final day and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they failed to get the win they need which would leave them hoping things fall their way elsewhere.
